Governments are expected to defend the people against all kinds of threats. Internal and external. Western Governments have to work within the confines of democracy which means answering to the people. If the general wave of opinion is to ban porn then that is what they will attempt to achieve. If they try to do something the people do not want they will lose the next election. Simple. The failure in democracy comes only when the people are apathetic and the elite can get away with much of what they want.

Personally I would prefer to review all aspects of violence. To start the debate about whether it would be better to see soft porn, as opposed to the hard violence we see in the movies.

Whilst in the UK, I'm a republican, as I regard the Royal Family as, at best, an irrelevance, and at worst, a bunch of parasites.
Despite there being a royal family (something most americans are jealous of), they are there at the sufferance of the people, and that is all that counts in a democracy. Their power has been continually prescribed and reduced since King John, and was far less significant at the time of George III than most Americans imagine.
They imagine that the monarch had real power because that serves their own mythology about democracy.
The truth is that post revolution, people had less political power in the USA than they did in the UK which was renowned across Europe as the home of freethinking.
It is no wonder that the US was a British invention due to this fact.
I regard the UK as fundamentally more democratic than most other countries, and miles ahead of the US, where there are only 2 choices, both capitalist, to represent 270 million, many of whom are too apathetic to vote feeling distant from the political process.
