Below is a historical roadmap of theoretical physics from 1930 to 1997.

This particular history details how theorists tried to find a foundation for uniting gravity with quantum mechanics.

It takes two : quantum matter / gravity ( kT ) and

quantum energy ( h*f) to create Existence.

Do these two have a common foundation ?

You forgot to add my contribution

2014-2018

Sam (my last name kept secret) comes up with GUT (rewrites SR in process). Keep an eye out!

Nowadays: 1995-2000

Spin Foams , Nonperturbative strings,

BH radiation from strings, BH radiation from loops,

Strings-noncommutative Geometry.

Eigenvalues of area and volume

Null Surface Formulation . . . . . .

And « Quantum gravity phenomenology »

Concluding remarks

So, where are we, after 70 years of research?

There are well-developed tentative theories, in particular strings and loops,

and several other intriguing ideas.

There is no consensus, no established theory, and no theory

that has yet received any direct or indirect experimental support.

About “ strings theories”

There are many string theories. And the growing catalogue

of string theories evokes trouble. Because one theory is better

than the other one, but at the same time each new theory brings

new problems. Therefore Lee Smolin wrote:

‘ . . . at least one big idea is missing.

How do we find that missing idea?’

/ Book: ‘ The trouble with Physics’ Page 308. by Lee Smolin. /

My conclusion:

It is impossible to find a foundation for uniting gravity

with quantum mechanics using string theories.
