in the beginning (time) God (something that stared it) created (energy) the heaven (space), some translations say heavens and the earth (matter).
God was not present in His creation until "the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters". the reason for saying that is God inhabits eternity and that would be before the beginning in the sense there always was.
