In reality, this is much more likely to BE a white sphere with black spikes than it is to be arbitrary pointy shapes that happen to land in that configuration. Likewise, could be either three cutout circles aligned very precisely or three circles with a triangle over them, and one of those scenarios is much more likely than the other.
There is no reason to believe that the borders of the shape can't be the same as the background color or that it's an illusion to see it exist.
this is not an illusion

It is exacly an illusion if you see a 3D shape. That's what the brain does.Advocate wrote: ↑Mon Dec 07, 2020 6:06 pm

What in fact you are seeing is a flat 2D collection of black and white shapes.

A portrayal of a 3d object in a 2d medium is not an illusion, it's a lower resolution version of reality. If an image seems to be intended to portray a 3d object, and if a 3d object could look identical, what would be the reason for seeing it as 2d? It can be a 2d representation of a 3d object without breaking the bounds of reality ffs.

Re: this is not an illusion
What’s going on here is, the perceptual system is completing an incomplete object, as advocate mentioned, the way it does that is by determining the closest match, or the most likely thing that pattern coincides with.
I wouldn’t specifically say it is illusion, any more than any of our visual system which is only a representation, is an illusion, it’s more a case of prediction with incomplete information.

That gets to my point. The object isn't necessarily incomplete. Whether or not there is a sphere is unknown to us because the boundary of the ball is indistinguishable from the background. We have to guess either way. Guessing it's an illusion instead of a perfectly plausible Real thing is a fallacy.
