Hi this is Ramu...not DAM. A lot of people are non dualists. Not just DAM and not just me. Where are you getting this idea that we are the same person?

Guess it's hard to accept that all this mental noise, all these concepts and ideas that have been accumulated over the years are actually not what you are, that there was something there before you started thinking "I am" and later "I am such and such..."
That this "thing" that was there is not a thing is even harder to accept and that "it" has actually never left, that "it" is all there is... well...
So we fight for the ideas and beliefs that we identify with... what else is there to fight for?

Being alive means being a small entity in an environment that constantly wants to absorb you, both literally and metaphorically. The ego is an organism's shield. The ego says, "I am, and I intend to stay that way. You cannot claim me or my stuff" (not yet).

The question then comes from the OP, what might prompt people to be reluctant to give up their shields?

Most people are not even aware that they carry a shield - hard to drop something when you don't even know that you carry it... even harder when you believe that you are it.

Good news is that it doesn't really have to be dropped - it's actually good enough to be aware of it - it will unravel on its own accord.

Fear of the unknown is the No.1 reason as far as I can tell.
The 2nd reason is diminishing returns - it's too much effort to change.

Combine those into fear of change and it's just another extinction vector.
