What goes into decision making?

Is the mind the same as the body? What is consciousness? Can machines have it?

What goes into decision making?

Post by Philosophy Explorer »

Is it just reason and emotion? Or is something else involved?

An example would help clarify.

Used to sell expensive tvs. Reason would say that the prospect would have to commit a considerable part of his funds to purchase the tv. Emotion would say that the tv has sufficient entertainment value to make the purchase worthwhile (his spouse may have different reasoning and emotions about it).

Reason and emotion can vary from time to time and person to person. Can anybody suggest other factors?

Decision making is all about pros, and cons, tradeoffs, benefit, reward, and cost in terms. We are always making decisions whether we like it or not. Every alternative may or may not be considered. A decision is an investment. When you make a decision you are buying into its cause and effect. Your decisions become your reality.

Time is of the essence, and also how one structures their life. If you are prioritized, and organized and have good resources, your decisions will be more under your control and purpose. Also you have to be aware and know yourself, your strengths and weaknesses and plan accordingly.

Some people try to fit things in their lives that make no practical sense, and their are temptations, and risks that may not fit with how you run your own ship . One of the biggest needs in society is to avoid impulse decisions. Consider the content and the substance, and worth, in all decisions. A decision is a responsibility, and a commitment.

Good decisions take good character qualities. Bad decisions can leave you high, and dry, and trapped.

It's best to come up with a plan of action that is workable. And be ready to adapt, while remaining firm on solid evident convictions.

The best thing is to make your decisions work for you and not against you. People are starved for the right knowledge and information. It's perfectly conceivable that some people don't have the opportunities, that others may have, because of how they positioned themselves throughout life. It's like starting over every time they make a decision.

Everything is a decision. And there are many types of decisions. Some people this very moment are running out of decisions they can make. Navigating your ship, you don't want to capsize, or worse.
