The use of drugs is a simple tool, that an individual may chose to use, in the exploration of our quickly developing consciousness.

Our beautiful landscape of consciousness is neither criminal nor a sign of mental illness.

Individuals who use drugs to visit different aspects of world of consciousness is exactly like prior explorers using ships, airplanes, and automobiles to explore new territory of our earthly world.

Why do we treat this strange, beautiful, amazing new world with such contempt?

Using drugs should not be considered criminal unless it impacts upon the freedom of others so one
should be free to take whatever they want long as they accept responsibility for the consequences

So, continuing with my metaphor of travel within the three dimensional world;

Using an airplane should not be considered criminal unless it impacts upon the freedom of others so one
should be free to travel wherever they want long as they accept responsibility for the new perspective they obtain.

...still seems like your premise is cloaked in fear or a criminal framework.

See what I mean?

Some rediscover the gift of childlike wonder and innocence.

There are cultures that have a completely different outlook on natural drugs, for example shamanism (can be found in its purest way in the jungles of Peru).
Since these cultures are considered poor from our Westerner point of view (that measures everything with money), we have no understanding for their outlook. In fact, even though these people never write philosophy books or appear in TV debates, they may understand many things better , and natural drugs play a role in it.
However, be aware of synthetic drugs, that will easily make you a slave of your own needs, needs for the drugs that can't be overcome. Then the fun stops and your theory ends...

Aren't we all creatures of habit? Aren't we all addicts?

We are all slaves to our own needs now...

A distinction between natural & synthetic is non-existent in most cases.

Whatever drug use may be considered, it's ultimately self-inflicted. But yes, it should not be compared to mental illness, which is not a choice. On criminality, it's not the drug use that should be considered a crime, but the negative behaviour it causes to keep using the drugs.

If drugs were legalized the government could regulate them and assure their purity and quality, but most importantly the government could profit from the regulation and sale of drugs instead of spending money fighting a futile war on drugs. Prohibition didn't work on alcohol and it won't work on drugs. The whiny liberals need to be kicked out and let some realistic conservatives set policy. It's not the job of the government to tell everyone what to do and when to do it, it's the job of the government to protect it's citizens from outside hazards, and not to protect it's citizens from themselves.

so much for government sponsored health care...

the penalty for all crimes committed under the influence should be at least doubled

Self imposed conditions should be exempt.

Well, I don't see it like that with only that data. And mostly people don't do it either, for example smoking isn't seen as a crminal act, or a mental illness.

The problem with decriminalization of drugs is that we now have to put up.with people doing it in public, and at the very least making themselves a public nuisance; dangerous and unstable ones at that. People will still commit crimes to get their legal drugs, because they won't suddenly up.and get jobs to pay for their next fix. So instead of catching them at the usage phase, we will have to wait until they advance to robbery or fraud to pay for it.

Hey brother, can you spare a dime (bag)?

Legalizing drugs, we will have to put up with many users in our midst, just like drunks. I already have to breath in medical Marijuana, because people smoke it near me. Then they drive off, impaired.
