What I was wondering about was/is how spoken language ever got off the ground. I can imagine that "ugh?" meant "is dinner ready?" This is a bit like the chimp mirror experiment. How did the caveman make the connection between the primitive word he'd never before heard and the idea or thing it referenced? In the early days of language development, it was impossible to express complex thoughts and emotions.
