A poetic question?

Is the mind the same as the body? What is consciousness? Can machines have it?

People say this often, but I'm not sure what they mean by conscious and unconscious states.

Obviously, most of our lives are not in a coma - or we couldn't have made suspension bridges, Avatar and Southern Comfort - so you must mean unaware in some particular way, or of some particularly important aspect of the world, or of our own lives.

We're all the time aware of something. Even during sleep. Could we sustain cognitive awareness of everything in our surroundings? Could we function effectively (or even adequately to survival) if we didn't focus our attention on one critical task or datum at a time? If our ancestors had tried to be conscious of everything all the time, might they not have been so distracted as to get run over by lions before the age of reproduction - in which case, of course, we wouldn't be here to wonder about them?
