Re: What's stopping us from seeing the truth?
This is no problem that a rational human being would have. You, therefore, must be irrational. This is an example of you having an agenda, due to your limitation, such that you subscribe to a belief that is in fact false. You cannot provide such a person, but I can provide proof via the records of ...

Re: What's stopping us from seeing the truth?
Just one question. How do you get around the problem of induction? It is not self-contradictory nor is it inconceivable to claim that humans don't need O2 in the air. Well, that fell on deaf ears. Not at all, I had missed your post, until now. It would seem your impatience breeds your presumption. ...

Re: Philosophy of Mind
Hi everybody! I recently watched a fantastic talk, 'Mazes of the Mind', on the contrasting contributions of neuroscience and philosophy to account for consciousness. I think it might be really insightful for the present debate. http://iai.tv/video/mazes-of-the-mind Enjoy! Emily. Interesting how thi...

Re: Robots vs Humans The War to Come
What I meant to imply is that the re-animation of a corpse would lack the soul- it having departed. This being the reason why it was not as it was before. There would be no reason materialistically why a person would loose memory, personality, experience etc, as these would be wired into the brain ...

Re: Robots vs Humans The War to Come
I am not exactly sure what type of argument King is developing but I think the following argument is where we are headed. Is it logically possible{not actually) to have a human being that is exactly the same as us in every way, yet lacking conscious experience, sentience, qualia, soul? If we can es...

Re: Robots vs Humans The War to Come
There is a resonant consciousness which belongs to the original of the species which cannot be replicated . ... Care to explain what this "resonant consciousness" is? John Gray has written some very interesting material ,about transference of cognition and he concludes that there are cert...

Re: Robots vs Humans The War to Come
I'll go with David Chalmers on this one. Him being an Aussie and all of that. David Chalmers refers to phenomenological consciousness as, 'the hard problem' and cognitive consciousness as, 'the easy problem' The easy problems are those that are directly susceptible to the standard methods of cogniti...

Re: Robots vs Humans The War to Come
So what of robots? Will there ever be a machine that is conscious. That is to say, a machine that has experience, or is experience only reserved for humans?

Re: Robots vs Humans The War to Come
This 'error' is the essence of his metaphysics (should we chose to categorise the ToF as such), so he can't get off the hook, nor should we try to make excuses for him. This is only an error is retrospect and works inside the intellectual milieu of his time. The endemic assumption he is inevitably ...

Re: Robots vs Humans The War to Come
Perhaps Plato is making 'a category error' when he postulates his theory of Forms. Gilbert Ryle gives us an example of this when he tells the story of a son showing his parents the University he is about to attend. He shows he parents a number of colleges, libraries, playing fields, scientific depar...

Re: Language
As a programmer I am quite a bit frustrated having to learn new languages all the time that all do basically the same thing. Now I am aware that new features do occur and sometimes it is better to rewrite the language for efficiency improvements and yet it all seems like same old same old - loops, ...
