Re: Why Do We Suffer?

Life is the greatest gift nature can inadvertently give us. To resent the bit of pain and death that comes with it is being rather unthankful for our greatest gift. In some cases, no doubt. For others life is largely torture. Of course the rest of us are somewhere in between, but the fact remains t...

Re: Why Do We Suffer?

We suffer due to entropy. To be alive is to briefly resist the constant destruction that is an intrinsic part of how reality works. So each of us must decline and die, and feel pain as a warning of entropic threats. I've also noticed with age that if you don't make yourself suffer with work, exercis...

Re: Do farm animals and domesticated animals suffer greatly?

Humans who are suffering greatly can also reproduce, and do so all the time. There is no doubt that animals in captivity suffer greatly.

Re: What would it take to convince you that somebody is a prophet?

Shouldn't this be easy? If a person has a proven record of predicting correctly then they are a prophet. If their predictions are hit or miss, then they're a normal person. If enough people speculate about the future, chances are that some will be more accurate than others. So if there are, say, a t...

Re: Women, does this make you feel good about yourself?

Mmmm, let's just say "older" :) Being retired without financial pressure makes me feel good. Being freed from getting up early, commuting, office politics, work pressure, being stuck indoors on nice days, struggling to squeeze in business hours chores, etc. As for appearances, mirrors don...

Phil, I don't think that older women who loiter around philosophy forums are the target audience.

Re: How to respond to an insult on a forum ?

What's the beef? Is it them? Is it you? Both? Pardon ? What beef ? "Beef" is a colloquial term for "complaint" or "gripe". If someone insults you then they obviously have a gripe with you. If someone has a gripe with you then it's a matter of working out if it's you, i...

Re: Can art be repulsive?

"Repulsiveness" is subjective. Obviously. There is no "absolute repulsiveness". I didn't think I've given that impression.

Merzbow is art BTW, just not art to most people's taste.

Re: What Life Meaning Is The Most Valuable?

If we manage to get through this one we could theoretically keep going all the way up to the big crunch. ...unless there's another inhabitable Universe around the corner somewhere that we can fold our tents and silently move into. I suspect we'd welcome a big crunch then as much as we would welcome...

Re: Can art be repulsive?

And I'm very aware experimental artists don't care about whom they repel, that doesn't change the fact no repulsive artworks by experimental artists are Art or generally considered so. However, you are still free to provide some examples of actually repulsive Art, not just works of Art some conside...

Re: Can art be repulsive?

This is interesting and true, but none of this art is repulsive, nor is it meant to be. Most art that most people would consider repulsive wasn't designed to be so. The artist simply didn't consider the tastes of mainstream audiences. Just as the mainstream artist doesn't care that they repel some ...
