You've got a very successful county cricket team too, which I can't help being jealous about as a lancastrian.

Hi xenophon,

If you take sally's advice and go for a "proper" book then I'm currently reading Karl Popper's Conjectures and Refutations and it's very clearly written and enjoyable. I also remember Descartes' Meditations on First Philosophy as a good read.

The wisdom of the Greeks.

The gods did not reveal, from the beginning, All things to us; but in the course of time, Through seeking we may learn, and know things better. But as for certain truth, no man has known it, Nor will he know it; neither of the gods, Nor yet of all the things of which I speak. And even if by chance ...

Hi Rick, I think your magazine is already excellent. I would be interested in an issue covering ideas of subjectivity and objectivity and whether they trap us in a false dichotomy. I'm thinking of some of the ground that Mary Midgley covered in 'The Myths we Live By' and I'm also interested in Micha...

Hi Panos, Glad you made it back from your secret mission intact. I hope you’re managing to get plenty of sleep to recover. My sleep is still disturbed by questions calling out for answers. It’s like a scene from Dante’s Inferno. Perhaps our exchange of ideas about self-confidence and belief describe...

Panos, congratulations on your principled stand on monogamy. I'm sorry if I took your statement on truth being based on the logical world a bit too literally. Reading your paragraph "A belief, I reckon is a truth ... I used me (personal) logic to derive such a truth / belief.", I think we'...

Well. I guess we could take a page out of Wittgenstein's book and say there is nothing knowable, save logic. Hi John, thanks. I have to admit that Wittgenstein hasn't crossed my philosophical threshold yet. Where does this come from? Could you elaborate? The statement sounds entirely reasonable. It...

empirical reality?

"religious belief co-existing with doubt". I thought that is a new topic discussion on its own... Well, if you'd like to start another topic on the "Philosophy of Religion" forum then I'd be happy to contribute! It feels to me like crossing a river by stepping on the stones on i...

What is truth?

I believe the way this world is made there can be no truth And yet the word persists and is frequently heard. So what is it that people are talking about? I think every person, according to his experience he makes observations then groups them into laws and believes they represent reality until pro...

our perception of the physical world is encaged by our 3 dimensional senses. Plato offers a very nice similee of a person chained in a cave, looking straight ahead at the shadows of shapes or creatures that pass in front of a burning fire. We never see the actual creatures, only their shadows and t...
