Re: Geometry (a useful fiction)
I do not think that only what we observe is real but that only what we observe can be established as being real. In science only what is observable can be tested and so anything which is non observable is beyond its remit as untestable hypotheses are non scientific by definition. But that does not ...

Re: Gravity, Time and Leibniz.
When you reduce everything absolutely, you achieve a structural form of information at a point which can describe each point in space as having a quantized set of directions defined by both linear and circular such that the sum 'speeds' (not simply velocity) add up to each point as moving constant. ...

Re: Time/ Space: from Hawking back to Einstein / Minkowski.
Minkowski was full of shit and physics hasn't made a lick of sense ever since. Representing time as a spatial dimension orthogonal to the Cartesian 3-space was undoubtedly a clever mathematical trick but it is metaphysically non-kosher nevertheless because Cartesian dimensions are bi-directional. T...

Re: Geometry (a useful fiction)
surreptitious57, I understand you fairly. Yet I somewhat disagree with the argument that suggests no certainty can ever be found. It's circularity is akin to the very problematic interpretations of Gödel's Incompleteness Theorem. Should it be 'true' that The interpretation of the following sentence ...

Re: Questions for the friends of qualia.
I think the problem is resolved if we reduce the idea of 'qualia' to how the brain likely stores its data. Although I don't provide a precise means for this inside the brain, it can be described logically by analogy to 'C Computer Language' thing called a structure . To define this, you begin by pre...

Re: What Anti-Gun Nuts Need to Learn
If we are to respect any 'constitution' as fixed, does this not also "dictate" how all people from then on are to permanently accept regardless of changing societies? The OP seems to be defending that "originalist" position yet should this not extend to an even earlier constituti...

Re: Is morality just a subset of reason?
.... ... With this in mind, one might consider the possibility that the thing we call "morality" is really nothing more than a subset of logic and reason. What do you think about this conclusion? Is this the accurate way of looking at morality, or is there more to it? Moral concepts are d...

Re: Gravity, Time and Leibniz.
I only read the OP and a few responses so far but feel that I have to interject to respond to the first before I read on as you appear to have gone into some great detail that I might not be able to respond until later. I agree with Obvious Leo that we have to consider a simpler description if one i...

Re: Symbolism, Meaning & Nihilism in Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction
Mark Conard reveals the metaphysical truths lurking under the rug in Tarantino’s cult classic. https://philosophynow.org/issues/19/Symbolism_Meaning_and_Nihilism_in_Quentin_Tarantinos_Pulp_Fiction This was a good interpretation. When I originally saw the movie, I liked it for its unusual style and ...

Hi Scott, ... I already tried to post on another subject to start but the site timed out on me and my whole post is lost. I assume you mean that when you click the preview or submit button it takes you to the login screen and if you then login you've lost your post. If so then before logging in hit...

I echo the welcome of the others, Scott, and offer a suggestion regarding getting timed out. Simply write your comment as a word document and paste it in when you're ready to post it. I haven't struck such a problem on this site but I've encountered it elsewhere and can fully understand your frustr...

Re: Geometry (a useful fiction)
I began an in-depth post the other day here and lost it all when I was somehow disconnected. Let me try again. First off I have concern with most people today to presume that what we are only able to directly observe through our senses is all we can be certain of. It's nice to see here Obvious Leo w...

Thanks, guys. I'm glad to be here and look forward to some good discussions and debates. That connection issue is becoming commonplace everywhere. My computer system is presumably better than most yet trying to ascertain where the problem lies is difficult even with the extent of learning I have so ...

I'm Canadian-born and partially American raised but prefer non-National designations. I'm both partially educated and self-taught in almost every area to a never-ending degree. Philosophically, I'm non-theist, a "gnostic" atheist (meaning I now 'know' and can argue against traditional reli...
