Re: The supernatural
If reality is everything that exists, and is composed of nature and the supernatural, we may have to be concerned with the meaning of the verb, "to exist". Maybe not. It makes me shudder to think of it, though -- philosophical territory I fear to tread!

Re: The supernatural
I can't help but think of the possibility of other life forms on other planets -- sentient beings who may be capable of understanding more of "nature" than can human beings. I think that's completely possible... however... here's the trippy part... sentient beings may be on a different &q...

Re: The supernatural
Some of what we don't know today may become known to us later, but how much is there to know? And is there any part of it that may be "knowable" to some other life form (maybe even one on our own planet) that cannot be known to us as human beings? This is why I'm taking another look at my...

Re: The supernatural
The supernatural: That part of reality containing events, the causes of which humans are incapable of understanding or explaining due to the inherent limitations of Homo sapiens. I agree. I think the "super" natural is that which is beyond the common/ordinary natural which we humans use t...

Re: The supernatural
Thanks, Lacewing! I appreciate your vote of confidence in my definition! I rather like it, too. But ... I can't help but think of the possibility of other life forms on other planets -- sentient beings who may be capable of understanding more of "nature" than can human beings. As you sugge...

Re: The supernatural
Whether any of these events are "supernatural" or "unusual nature" is another matter. Many of you have related interesting or amazing experiences related to use of mind-altering substances (e.g., marijuana, LSD, maybe even chocolate or sugar :D ). Someone may just say, "Wel...

Re: Pick the Door with the Prize!
https://forum.philosophynow.org/search.php?keywords=monty+hall Just saying ... Thanks for your interest, mickthinks! I was joking about the fact that the author of the xkcd cartoon (in the link provided by mtf) and I had a similar thought about goats in the Monty Hall problem (coincidence). Thanks ...

Re: Deleted Thread?
I would hope that if the forum managers delete a post or thread, they would notify the poster as to their reasons. Just guessing: Is the fact that Einstein might have appeared racist at some point in his life a philosophical issue? Racism itself, however, might be seen as a philosophical issue. Also...

Droll Implications of the Supernatural
I don't have a specific story of a supernatural event, but I want to preserve the spirit of another thread, "The Supernatural", started by QuantumT, that welcomes comments from folks who entertain the possibility of the supernatural. Therefore, I welcome comments regarding the "logic&...

Re: Pick the Door with the Prize!
To wtf: Posing the game with goats as losers and a car as the prize led to this anecdote: There was a farmer who played the game and never switched, because he wanted a goat more than the car. There's an xkcd for that. https://xkcd.com/1282/ Thanks, wtf, for this link! I thought I was being origina...

Re: Pick the Door with the Prize!
Thank you, wtf, for joining in and giving a clear explanation of the odds involved in this game: The problem becomes clear once we explicitly state the assumptions. * Monty knows what's behind each door. * Monty must reveal exactly one door. * Monty must reveal a door concealing a goat. Now the puzz...

Re: Opinions on Physics - Puzzles, mysteries, that sort...
Greetings, Aetixintro, I'm back after about seven years -- I would still be happy to see an expert in quantum theory come forward here and comment on my analogies involving throwing dice, my idea that a wave-form as nothing more than a diagram of a probability distribution on a blackboard or in the ...

Re: Frailty of scriptures
Religious scripture from a religious tradition tells stories, myths, and legends and contains ideas, written by human beings, that help a group of people define themselves. For example, The Hebrew scriptures may have been written before the various tribes even coalesced, and the scriptures, which ga...

Re: Pick the Door with the Prize!
Back to the question of how much a gambling casino, which buys the prize, should charge a player of the three-door problem to play each game: vegetariantaxidermy pointed out the inconsistency of human players (if I'm not mistaken), which makes the odds hard to predict. The casino accounts for human ...
