Deriving an ought from an is
In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return. Is We are born, we live, we die. There is no supernatural, no rebirth, no reincarnation, no afterlife, no soul, no God, no judgment. We...

Re: Who is an anti-semite?
What is your definition of an anti-semite? For the people who use the term like there's no tomorrow, everyone of the planet except for them. For me, not being pedantic about the literal meaning of the word (which technically makes most Arabs and only some Jews, Semites,) people of pretty strong far...

Re: A Theory of Relative Time made by me and nobody else!
Why not come to a philosophy forum and explain to its membership how they are better off studying science? Coming from the least scientific person on this forum.... Scientism isn't science as Popper pointed out. Now in my time I have met the odd genuine scientist and they had several qualities you ...

Re: A Theory of Relative Time made by me and nobody else!
No, your "theory" is stupid, and in science, it's evidence that counts, not couch-potato speculation like you philosophy guys engage in. Why do you think scientists and engineers get bored to death when a humanities guy stops on by to discuss their science theories? It's worse than talkin...

Nietzsche's Eternal Recurrence Proven by Science
An interesting youtube video from a physics channel discussing maths. Without realising it they prove the eternal reccurence is actually true, even though Nietzsche meant it as a thought experiment.

Re: Scientists who believe in God
Atheists are more liberal and tolerant, less neurotic; more willing to help the poor; more likely to be a member of the intellectual elite; more likely to be a scientist, and be one of the most eminent; more likely to be ethnically Jewish. Left wingers not liberals are more likely to be atheists, n...

Re: Legislators and Sexual Conduct
The St. Louis County attorney's office said it will not pursue charges against state Rep. Kerry Gauthier for an alleged sexual encounter with a 17-year-old male at a rest stop. Authorities found that the Duluth DFLer engaged in oral sex with the 17-year-old in a wooded area behind the rest stop on ...

Was he anymore 'brave' than Gandhi or Nelson Mandela. . Yes, that's why I called him, The Bravest Philosopher of Our Time... . Erm! Nelson Mandela came after King and much closer to our time. Hell, he is still alive, he is our time. BTY I wouldn't call either a philosopher, I would call Mandela a b...

Re: Richard Dawkins as 'Anti-Philosopher'
The idea that humans are no different to animals is another myth, and a very curious one. I often wonder what the utility of this idea is, because I have learned that challenges to it are treated scornfully. I *think* the appeal is that it actually solves what Erich Fromm called 'the fear of freedo...

Re: Richard Dawkins as 'Anti-Philosopher'
What is an "evolutionary urge? Gazelles stand up moments after they are born. I don't think this is by chance, nurture or reason, it's something they have evolved as a survival mechanism and their brains are now hard wired to do it. Unless you have another explanation? if there is a "faca...

Re: Richard Dawkins as 'Anti-Philosopher'
We are painters, pipers and prisoners, seers of visions riding a steel breeze and asking awkward questions like "why?" True. But we are not asking "why" as random genes; we are asking as existential beings reflecting upon ourselves and the universe. As humans we demand meaning a...

Re: Richard Dawkins as 'Anti-Philosopher'
Evolution is not just 'how' but 'why' too. We are a random collection of genes, no more. For a random collecton of genes there is no meaning, no teleologoy, Evolution clearly answers the 'why' question, there is no 'why'. To ask 'why' you must first presume evolution is not true. If you cannot make...
