Re: Fighting for the ‘Soul of France,’ More Towns Ban a Bathing Suit: The Burkini

Ken wrote to Greta, please excuse me for butting in as if Greta cannot object on her own behalf but here I go: Would you be instantly willingly and happily volunteering to adapt to more modern and progressive values, in another country in which you wanted to or had to move to, even if that included ...

Re: Paradox of block universe

Bahman wrote: Yes, there is a problem in block universe. The problem is related to the fact that motion in block universe is due to change in perspective of an agent. This means that the changes in perspective of many agents must be synchronized otherwise you don't have a consistent changes. But age...

Re: Fighting for the ‘Soul of France,’ More Towns Ban a Bathing Suit: The Burkini

Burkinis are in bad taste like not cleaning your fingernails before you go to a dinner party, or conversely, like wearing jewels on a soup round. If the local custom dictates that body shape be displayed, then there would be less aggressive body coverings than the burkini. Nevertheless, a better way...

Re: Time does not exist.

Time doesn't exist like atoms and other items exist. Time underwrites existence itself: time is the condition of change.

Re: Paradox of block universe

With reference to the title of the conversation I don't find any paradox. The so-called "block universe" is the view from eternity, and change is the view from time. The referent remains the same in both cases.

Re: God is a Concept...

. First off & most importantly WELCOME to the forum! Number two - G REAT question. To your point; I believe in the inherent good of Organized Labor. The men & women along with their active agreement books and the companies that are signatory to a valid, legally recognized agreement book is what I c...

Re: God is a Concept...

I'd like to understand what 'God' means to you, as I'd quite like to understand your case. Is your claim epistemic or ontological?

Re: What is an Artist?

The function, wages, and social status of artists changes with the cultural values of time and place. Better ask "What is an artist in present day New York?" or "What was an artist among the middle classes in eightteenth century rural England?"

Re: Paradox of block universe

Bahman originally wrote: God is omniscient and timeless. This means that we are dealing with a block universe since all states of universe are known to God. This means that motion is an illusion since nothing changes in a block universe. We are however experience changes. This means that changes can...

I used to belong to a Humanist group which ran a sub group for philosophy. Both groups were philosophical and generally well informed Then I left Edinburgh and came to live here where the tradition is commercial not intellectual .

Re: Getting Beneath Language

Concepts cannot be manipulated without the use of symbols of some sort. Language happens to have more creative potential using symbols than any other communications medium. Language is one variety of social behaviour. I say "symbols". Signs are used by all animals that can learn(one may watch a dog ...

Re: I am new to Philosophy Now

It's nice to see some kenned faces here and meet some new ones which makes the effort to learn a new format well worth the effort. The occasion is that the other site cannot receive my posts and the owner doesn't seem to have got my three emails about the problem.
