Re: To kill one or to kill many - a dilemma
Hello, My intention when entering this board was to listen a lot first before commenting on other people’s threads, simply because I have no philosophical training whatsoever and I don't want to sound silly while not conveying my thoughts properly. However, this thread is too much for my desire for ...

Re: Using one philosophy as a framework for learning Philosophy
What sort of things are you interested in already? Maths, law, history, art, religion...? They will all have a philosophy. If you start with something you know something about already, you will have a head-start understanding any references. I would recommend a general book like 'The Blackwell Comp...

Re: Using one philosophy as a framework for learning Philosophy
Hi, Londoner I’ll try to answer you in reverse order if you don’t mind. What sort of things are you interested in already? Maths, law, history, art, religion...? They will all have a philosophy. If you start with something you know something about already, you will have a head-start understanding an...

Re: Using one philosophy as a framework for learning Philosophy
Hi, Thanks for your input. If you are interested in philosophy in the sense of Plato, Descartes, Hume, Kant and the rest, it is a disastrous choice. Rand is not a philosopher in that sense, so if you learn the meaning of technical language from her it will be no help at all in understanding other ph...

Re: Using one philosophy as a framework for learning Philosophy
Hi, Thanks for your comments. There is no creditable "philosophy" I`ve come across beyond the known science, natural selection, which can reasonably be described as applicable to everything. However, whilst I`d describe the search as philosophy I`d describe the findings of that search as c...

Re: Using one philosophy as a framework for learning Philosophy
Hi, Thanks for your comments. Objectivism has its place, as all axioms (self-evident truths) have an objective nature. The problem occurs, in the respect that objectivism on its own terms requires some form of subjective understanding and premise. We can observe this further within the nature of the...

Using one philosophy as a framework for learning Philosophy
Hello, I have been reading a little philosophy with no rhyme or reason for around two years, but now, I want to be more methodical. Eventually, I want to come up with my own philosophy, but, truth be told, I hardly know what Philosophy really is. Therefore, I’ve decided to learn a philosophy (stress...

Re: Hello from a wannabe "philosopher combatant"
I am afraid both of you are correct, in a way. It’s hard to summarise what’s going on with me right now, first, because of our lack of a common background, and, second, because I myself can’t explain it yet… not even to myself. That’s why I need Philosophy. But I’ll try a bit, anyway. First, with re...

Re: Hello from a wannabe "philosopher combatant"
Welcome, Everyone is a philosopher to some degree, as everyone is pursuing knowledge to some degree. Philosophy translates to "love of knowledge", so you are no different in this regard than the rest of us. In many respects we all suffer the same sickness of ignorance. Here are 10 short t...

Re: Hello from a wannabe "philosopher combatant"
Have you watched The Andy Griffith Show, about American Paramilitary Forces operating in the Deep South of America during the era of civil rights movement here in America, of it's military spinoff, Gomer Pyle, who joins the Marine Corps during the Vietnam War? Hi, Thanks for jumping in. No. In fact...

Hello from a wannabe "philosopher combatant"
Hello, I am a Special Operations Police Officer from a violent Latin-American metropolis, and I’ve recently decided that I must learn Philosophy. It is hard enough to live “normal” life without being able to integrate events and ideas into an established philosophical framework, but combat has taugh...
