Re: What is the purpose of old age?
Is it white hair and wrinkly skin? Seems like a new ball game thanks, in part, to technology. Is it a disease? (I don't think so as we die due to specific causes). How would we identify old age? Are there any benefits to it? What is the purpose of old age? PhilX Sure, white hair and wrinkled skin -...

What I meant by spookeh was that it's not true and not based on fact.

Re: awarenesss of ego
For the most part, yeah. But then, we must ask, "What is awareness?", if not some external ego that we create.jackles wrote:Is the awareness of ego in others and our selves our true self. So we difine our selves by means of ego.

Re: What is the Foundation of Culture?
Work? Religion? Leisure? Or something else? The fourth one, I think is the answer. More specifically, the 'something else' that which permeates the first three components that are present in human culture, and that is the bonding of people itself to produce those things. It's the underlying 'World ...

Re: Good Translation for Plato's Republic?
Melchior ! I knew I recognized that spleen-venting vitriol, and your later comments confirmed it. You're the guy who used to argue with all the good Amazon reviews of West's Four Texts . Bloom is a fine translation, folks. If you don't like Bloom, try Sachs. Jowett is beautiful, I grant, but it is ...

I think you should try it at least, as it actually does help - one of the benefits being therapeutic and to articulate your emotions.

Fire In the Minds of Men
I've been reading this book Fire In the Minds of Men , by James H. Billington. It's a very wonderful, well done work, thoroughly chronicling the history of various revolutions, and revolutionary thinkers and philosophers that have helped generate all the ideas that exist in modern political history....

Re: Is the problem really theism? Or is it theists?
You're saying that the "average atheist" (for lack of a better word) just isn't curious, so defaults to atheism out of a sort of intellectual laziness? That is, robust arguments for theism just take too much intellectual work to refute? (Please correct me if I've misunderstood your point)...

Re: Do you need imagination to make art?
It would seem one needs imagination to do art. Whether to paint/draw a picture or compose music or write a book e.g. Can anybody pick up a paintbrush and paint a picture right off the bat? Or would forethought and imagination and training be required, roadmap to know where you want to get to? What ...
