Re: At what point do robots become self-aware?

Isn't the brain a computer of sorts? If not, what? A computer does not have the ability to sense anything...believe it or listen. A computer is not and never will be conscious, at least in its present form until it becomes akin to biological. If a robot puts out its hand next to yours and i raise a...

Re: At what point do robots become self-aware?

Reply to Hobbes' Choice: The chimp knew immediately that he was viewing his image in the mirror. At no time did he act as if the image (what he saw in the mirror) was another chimp imitating him. And he didn't look behind the mirror. An ink blot had been applied to his face unbeknownst to him. When ...

Re: At what point do robots become self-aware?

You would have to consult Skinner regarding how he supports his claim of self-awareness in pigeons. There are evidently many aspects of self-awareness of which is an awareness of how one looks (appearance). I assume this is the aspect of self-awareness that is alluded to in the chimpanzee example. ...

I first look to see who's calling it.
That's a response.

PhilX
But, what is it a response to? How could anyone be certain that my looking demonstrated self awareness? Am I looking because my name has been called or because someone has spoken?

Re: At what point do robots become self-aware?

How do humans demonstrate self-awareness? Shaving in the mirror. Chimps recognise themselves in mirrors, other animals do not. There are ways to experiment with this. According to Skinner, pigeons also recognize themselves in mirrors. I know I'm better looking than that fellow in the mirror whose f...

Re: At what point do robots become self-aware?

As I was saying, I will ask the robot for proof of its self awareness. The robot's name is Jack. I will ask Jack, "Jack, are you self-aware?" If Jack is AWARE that the inquiry is being directed at it, and is in a mood to respond, and answers, "Yes", I will demand proof. What proo...

Re: At what point do robots become self-aware?

Does awareness require intelligence? What are some manifestations of awareness? How many kinds of awareness are there? Is being aware of a rattlesnake on your doorstep the same as being aware that snakes are reptililes? What is the duration of awareness? Does it come and go? Is your reticular activa...

Re: At what point do robots become self-aware?

Is awareness of self and other a state of mind or a state of brain? Does self-awareness require experience? Do we ever set foot outside our brains? Does the brain construct reality? Where does the world (the visual representation) go when you close your eyes? Why do we treat as "out there"...

Re: Philosophical Investigations Part II - Wittgenstein

To whom it may concern: Is there a deep connection between language and human consciousness? Were pre-lingual humans aware of their consciousness or concerned about it; fascinated by it? Language is a means of informing - transmitting information. As for spoken language, didn't Wittgenstein (one of ...
