Re: Philosophy of Science

"Philosophy of science is philosophy enough". I think to understand this fully you would have to know the context of Quine's empiricism - namely that theories are always left underdetermined by that facts. What Quine meant is that the arguments often discussed in philosophy of science (e....

Re: New Guy

HI CS, If you keep asking philosophical questions - and don't continually attempt to rule out God - you will find God. This sounds like a promise to adherents of the skeptical method. I'm a skeptic so does that mean that I'll find God - because I'm not particularly expecting to but am open to the po...

Oh yes, if it had been 'sophophobia' I might have spotted it.

But yes, I am afraid of wisdom, or I love ignorance. Or is the lover of wisdom, afraid of ignorance?

All these questions...

Re: Goddàjen

At the end of her career, a gardener doesn't look at her beautifully tended lawns and borders, arbours and vistas, and feel a failure because next year the same weeds will need to be pulled and the same seeds will need to be sown. No, but if a new weed sprung up, hydra like, for every one pulled th...

Re: The Art of Leo Tolstoy

I remember being a youngster at university reading alone in my room. Suddenly, my flatmate burst in and asked me why I was sighing so much. I didn't even know I was doing it. I was reading Tolstoy's diaries.

The Art of Leo Tolstoy

Bus 2 Bondi quotes Tolstoy: "During this time, I went to the theatre 28 for the rehearsals of the Power of Darkness. Art, be- ginning as a game, has continued to be the toy of adults. This is also proved by music, of which I have heard much. It is ineffectual. On the contrary, it detracts when ...

Re: New to forum, introducing me.

At the moment i'm a little dissapointed in the apparent lack of recognition by psychology for the contribution and influence philosophy has had (and what it still has to offer) upon CBT. You're brave!! I'll think you'll find a more rigorous analysis here than you're used to from your colleagues and...

Its Nature's Law to take from more
And balance it with less
And in Time recompense what once
Was gave in such excess
All things on Earth obey this law
So too, does happiness.

Just re-reading the original post it is possible that Weinberg thinks there is no such thing as science, only individual scientific questions. As these individual questions require high levels of specific knowledge, maybe he sees philosophers as missing the point and inventing questions for themselv...

I'm sure many scientists openly or tacitly subscribe to scientism and believe either that scientific method is infallible or that it is the best way to acquire knowledge. Your average philosopher of science is unlikely to take such a straightforward view. Also most sceintific theories are both reple...
