Re: A Critique on Objective Morality

The original assertion was her/his denial of objective morality, The burden of proof is on the asserter: Not on this occasion where Occam economy can be brought to bear on the question and we note that the Platonist myth of an "objective" reality with respect to ANYTHING has never been sa...

Re: God is in Everybody but not Everybody is Good

I've already told you I don't buy the dualist narrative and you've made no attempt to provide an argument in its favour. The seer and the seen are one and the same.

Re: Roger Scruton

I must admit I didn't get the comparison to Russell either and assumed duszek had got a name confused. Russell would be appalled at Scruton's beatification of ignorance in general and at his promotion of religious belief in particular.

Re: Does the past exist ?

Yes, those moments of being, the "now" have passed and gone. What's more interesting to me is what's left behind. How would today's world be different had Julius Caesar not crossed the Rubicon? The ramifications (or relative lack) of everything that's every existed are indelibly infused i...

Re: Roger Scruton

Plato came from an aristocratic and wealthy family too and is this a reason not to read him ? Of course not. The best reason not to read Plato is because when it came to philosophy he didn't know his arse from his elbow. However because he came from a wealthy aristocratic family it was automaticall...

Re: On Moral Arguments Against Recreational Drug Use

string yourself out on smack and the government will keep you healthy... This is a response laden heavily with self-righteousness but poorly laced with logic. When it comes to the social "good" it is necessary to compare the merits of various solutions to whatever problem is under discuss...

Re: On Moral Arguments Against Recreational Drug Use

Is anyone here going to post to defend the continued prohibition of so-called illegal drugs? If so, on what grounds? DUI, taxing, universal health care -Imp Your parsimony of language is admirable but unfortunately rather opaque. It's rather difficult to determine whether you're for or against proh...

Re: Welcome to Heaven...

I went to an all boys boarding school in my youth, Harbal, and it was made emphatically clear to me by the men in frocks that for boys to stroke each other was a mortal sin. I subsequently found out that this was a privilege they chose to keep to themselves.

Re: Is Personal Identity Arbitrary?

Be careful not to fall into an argument with each other when you're actually saying the same thing, which is very much the way it looks to me. Yes, after re-reading this, it appears that you could be right! I've been around discussion forums for a long time, mate, and I see it happen all the...

Re: Does the past exist ?

Caesar crossing the Rubicon. When did this event exist exactly ? When he put one foot into the water ? When he was in the middle of the river ? When he stepped out on the other shore ? Did this event exist as long as his sandals were still wet ? You make a good point. That Caesar actually crossed t...

Re: God is in Everybody but not Everybody is Good

Are you visible, can you see you? The emergent form of matter and energy that comprises me is visible to anybody with the sensory apparatus to detect it. However I will never be visible to anybody in the form in which I currently am so the observer of me will be required to make his own cognitive m...
