It’s a word people use. What does ‘discuss’ mean? It that a command or a suggestion? Have you any preferred method of ‘discussion’ or just being lazy?

Re: "How do you define...?"...Definition
Definitions are something to do with some project directed at ‘efficiency’. If not we would be here - SOME level efficiency is essential. Proof is my response to the OP here

Re: Kant
Phenomena = appearances, and noumena = things-in-themselves, so far so good (if I understood correctly). But did he understand that technically and objectively, all phenomena are noumena (the noumena in the human head)? So some of the noumenon is directly 'knowable'. That is incorrect. Has anyone t...

Re: Is a Perfect Circle Real?
The issue is simply a case of mixing epistemic issues with ontological issues. If we can frame ‘real’ as not necessarily ‘reality’ then you might make headway into stating the obvious. A circle is REAL but no perfect circle can EXIST. Abstract ideas are ... well, abstract. Any argument against such ...

Re: Göbekli Tepe
I thought this was a philosophy forum not a poor man’s attempt at anthropological research or a site dedicated to archaeology? Anthropologists and archaeologists are very careful about misreading/misinterpreting data. Blind speculation on the archaeological site is of philosophical value only if it...

Re: Göbekli Tepe
But my point exactly, how do you know all the waffle you've spouted about the intentions and motives of the Tepe builders.(Oh! I see now, you're just repeating the opinions in that link of yours and passing it off as 'your' hunches. ) I read and watch what I can find and come up with a conjec...

Re: Expressing Emotions
Where do you live? Or more to the point, how do you live with regard to social interaction? Irrelevant. Sensationalism dictates that bad news rules. We’re not fed feel good stories because the market shows us such things don’t sell. FFS. How can your experience of people generally be irrelevant to ...

Re: Expressing Emotions
My view is that people generally have a natural disposition to express more “negative” thoughts and feelings than they do more “positive” thoughts and feelings. Where do you live? Or more to the point, how do you live with regard to social interaction? Irrelevant. Sensationalism dictates that bad n...

Re: Meditating with Descartes
I said : “ Part of the attraction I see other cling to in buddhist thought looks more like cowardice to me - the inherent need to deny reality; a dangerous path akin to nihilism.” I was hardly putting everyone who finds appeal in buddhist teachings into the same basket. But you were warning against...

Re: Meditating with Descartes
the inherent need to deny reality; a dangerous path akin to nihilism. Don't be so fast to put all anti-realists in the same basket. If we are to be frank - nihilism is true. Objectively there is no purpose to life and everything is meaningless in the grander scheme of things. Subjectively - I don't...

Re: Meditating with Descartes
The author says in her last paragraph, "Both philosophers and Buddhists want peace of mind;" How do we know what they want? Do they say that and, if the do, what do they mean? All human action is ego driven even if the ego is not DIRECTLY linked to the action. The Budhist monk and the Phi...

Re: Impermanence
Hi. I think you are right. We want to have a thing forever, but everything is subject to change and decay to our sadness. The point is, it is true that nothing lasts forever, but some may be contented with the idea of impermanence because they find some beauty in it. The beauty of impermanence and ...

https://philosophynow.org/issues/99/What_Did_Mary_Know Here's roughly what went through Mary's mind at this very moment. 1. I have never experienced this color before. 2. I didn't know apples were this color (because all the apples I ever saw were black&white!) 3. I need to give this color-expe...

Re: Insane Denial Of Conscious Experience
Steve - The error in what you have just said is that you are trying to take the language of Conscious Phenomenon and apply it to Physical Phenomenon. The Wavelength of a particular pure frequency of Electromagnetic Energy is a definite number, say 670 for Red Light. It does not make sense to talk ab...
