Re: The Stranger

by Camus. Do you think the anti-hero of this story succeeds in affirming that life is worth living? Right in the middle of it now, he just shot the guy (The Cure pretty much nailed it), I'll get back to this thread when I'm through. But from what I have gathered so far, he's essentially a zombie fr...

Re: What Book Changed Your Mind?

Steven C Hayes - Get out of your mind and into your life(or really - Sluta grubbla börja leva). And also two swedish psychiatrists who wrote a Swedish work inspired by Hayes. Mindfulness appeared to be drinking strange teas, wearing fluffy clothes and meditation until I read his book. Actually, it ha...

Re: Suppose all nuclear weapons were deactivated...

To make it clear, all the nuclear weapons can't be reactivated in this scenario, no matter what. It's felt by many that nuclear weapons acted as a deterrent to WWIII. So would deactivation deactivation lead to another World War? How would the world be affected? PhilX In the current situation I don'...

Re: What Book Changed Your Mind?

Almost evey programming text I've read. I'm very choosy, and hate wasting my time on bad information. And don't try to put computer humour into it. I'm not reading it because I want a giggle. I want to learn something. What's a "programming text"? Eg. Structure and Interpretation of Compu...

Re: Free Will Is An Illusion, But Freedom Isn’t

Re: D.D. Raphael

Reading of the education and working life of Dr. Raphael i just feel so JEALOUS. Had a friend in school who went to some college in Oxford, so he went there too. Read humanistic stuff for four years. *drool* Spent a working life basically as an esteemed Philosophy professor. Ok, he might have beaten...

Try to recognize a figure of speech. As to what, I refer to the creation of a 'strong' AI.
Same, same. Don't just throw up a link and give it a thumbs up. at least give a short recap.

Re: Justifying Our Moral Judgments

You use both moral sentimens and moral principles in moral situations. If you start with one, you continue with the other. Not something that will shake the earth but a good suggestion for a moral strategy anyhow imho.

Re: Free Will Is An Illusion, But Freedom Isn’t

(Well, Haha, if you get injured somewhere away from home you will have good use for other's compassion.) But regardless of that - this determinist or not determinist stuff, does that LEAD to anything? I frankly don't give a damn about my decisions being random or detemimed by a butterfly flying in R...

Re: France represents all of totalitarian Europe!

My feet are fine thanks, Bob, although my hips are fucked, but I can assure you that I'm perfectly self-reliant. I don't need a government to look after me but I'm acutely aware of the fact that this is more a question of good luck than good management. There are many people in my country far less ...

Re: ~ The Case For Socialism ~

There never has been a fully free market except at exceptional times in history. A free market give a continual upwards pressure on profits, and down wards pressure on wages and prices. It tends to deregulation unsafe work practices and exploitation. This is self implosive. The pressure for land to...
