Re: Professional Baseball & Performance-Enhancing Drugs

The sport which, more than any other, has been troubled by drugs and the ethical dilemmas they present has been professional cycling. Drug use of one kind or another was endemic in the sport for much of its history, but it was the prevalence in the nineties and noughties of EPO and other means of '...

Re: Professional Baseball & Performance-Enhancing Drugs

Darrin Belousek considers different ethical perspectives on drugs in sport. http://philosophynow.org/issues/102/Professional_Baseball_and_Performance-Enhancing_Drugs Most so-called 'performance-enhancing drugs' are not taken to 'enhance performance' but to heal quicker. Major sports are extremely t...

Re: Recommend me a movie.

Probably the top movies of all time are "A Clockwork Orange" by Stanley Kubrick, "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" by Sergio Leone, "The Graduate" by Mike Nichols, "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" by John Hughes, and "The Blues Brothers" by John Landis, all comedies. Of these, only the last two are any go...

Re: Is Judging Islamic Culture Possible?

First of all I'll start by saying I hate this form and am reluctant to participate in it. I wish it was one where authors of articles in the magazine take part. But then I understand why they might not join in, because of some of the nonsensical, lamebrain arguments they might or could find themsel...

Re: UFOs in an age of cellphones.

Cell phones, are you kidding me? With respect to UFO's one would have to have a lens such as this: http://i667.photobucket.com/albums/vv40/makemann/Canon%20500mm/XU3V5361.jpg --And that's just the lens without the camera body.-- In order to do any real UFO, fact gathering, that is what you'd need. ...

It's hardly my favourite band of time, or the best music of all time- but it speaks to me in a way few tracks do.

So what's yours?

Re: Good Translation for Plato's Republic?

Bloom's ideas of translation are entirely wrong, and "literal" translations are a farce. His translations of the Republic should be banned. I didn't mean to suggest that English translations of ancient Greek are actually literal. As I said, my advice to any reader would be to lean toward literality...

Re: Good Translation for Plato's Republic?

I could not get the link to work, but the ISBN in the link appears to be for a reprint of the Jowett translation. If that is so, I can understand your difficulty. That translation is from the nineteenth century. Which means it's better than new ones. Scholars can't write anymore. There are plenty o...

Re: Good Translation for Plato's Republic?

So I was wondering, do you guys know of any translations for Plato's Republic that is easy to understand and doesn't have lots of complicated vocabulary? Take, for example, two otherwise ordinary passages from The Republic , specifically the moment at which Polemarchus accosts Socrates in Book I: P...

So I was wondering, do you guys know of any translations for Plato's Republic that is easy to understand and doesn't have lots of complicated vocabulary? I second Metadigital's recommendation of Bloom's translation. When it comes to ancient Greek texts, the challenge is to find the right balance be...
