Re: Does God Exist?

This is the first issue of PN and the first article I've read. The very first argument seemed to me fallacious (a type of circular reasoning), but how can this be? Professor Craig is an expert, so it's more likely that I'm getting it wrong. No, you're not getting it wrong. I'm more inclined to thin...

Re: Gadzooks!

Theism is the belief in a benevolent, omnipresent figure who distributes blessings around the world. So, if I believe in a god that is not benevolent, nor omnipresent, am I an atheist? If 2 people believed in 2 different, mutually exclusive, benevolent, omnipresent figures who distributed blessings...

Re: Western Philosophy is bankrupt

The bankruptcy continues to play out today on modern university campuses; particularly among people on campus who refer to themselves as "phenomenologists". They can be found in philosophy depts. They can be found in Literary Theory depts. They can be found in Critical Theory depts, and they can be...

Re: Western Philosophy is bankrupt

No, philosophy is not love of wisdom. It's not enough. Religion and New Age movements love wisdom, but ultimately produce only shit. Philosophy is love of systemized thinking.

Re: Does God Exist?

I have heard before this name William Lane Craig (WLC) and was told he was the epitome of rational theism (itself a contradiction in terms, but anyway...). If this article is his best, clearly a disappointment. A collection of the most stupid claims theology has come up with. For example, when he st...

Re:

As for the topic: philosophy (all of it) is poop...a rarified exercise for insane persons and folks who wanna live in Ivory Towers (and never actually 'work' for their bread). There's a lot of philosophical work based on the category of praxis. Your unawareness of it explains your judgement from th...

Re: Western Philosophy is bankrupt

I understand and agree with this now. Please see this other thread regarding Kant. http://forum.philosophynow.org/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=12062 OK then, I've just read that excellent post and find that we agree on key issues, being one that at least part of western philosophy came up with the ingredien...

Re: Western Philosophy is bankrupt

Please see this other thread regarding Kant. http://forum.philosophynow.org/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=12062 Just took a peek and saw it was a long post, so I'll look at it closely later. A much more fruitful question is to ask: What was the state of Western philosophy immediately prior to Descartes? If b...

Re: Moderate socialism/capitalism is not necessarily problem

Being a happy amateur, That makes two of us... ...not having read too much political theory, I am still curious of the picture of possible steering mechanism of a state (or such) defined by the coordinate system spanned by the capitalism and socialism. First of all, those were "discovered" back in ...

Re: Socialism and capitalism in moderation is not the proble

There are reasons to cast some doubts over the usefulness of these two concepts of capitalism and socialism, as "oppossite ends of the political spectrum". Problems arise both from the abstract theoretical perspective and the practical or empirical grounds for this supposed dichotomy. The first prob...

Re: Western Philosophy is bankrupt

Conde Luncanor, Our brains are not deduction machines. They are primarily an organ whose purpose is the survival and maintenance of the body. The same is true of sense organs. Alright they are not machines, of any kind. I will assume that "purpose" means in this statement something different from "...

Re: Western Philosophy is bankrupt

We may agree that knowledge is NOT directly derived from sense perception, that the human brain is not a tabula rasa , and that modern biology and neuroscience can explain the structures of our minds and bodies, and how they interact with the environment. We may agree that the philosophy of Descarte...
