Re: Margaret Thatcher, R.I.P.
I was i the mining districts when thatcher went to war with them. I experienced the police paid vast amounts in wages become thugs and behave like their compatriots in Pinochets Chile. (He was a very close friend of thatcher although a murdering thug himself.) I remember the miner who said "The poli...

Re: Can Capitalism and Communism be combined?
I'm sorry, but I can't comment on something so ridiculous it's hard to believe anybody could take it seriously. http://washington.cbslocal.com/2012/11/15/census-u-s-poverty-rate-spikes-nearly-50-million-americans-affected/ ??????? Oh, I'm sorry, maybe North Korea or China can help us out. I think t...

Re: Can Capitalism and Communism be combined?
In response to Bob's BOLD outburst. Could anyone please reconcile these two view points. As I am only a EUROPEAN I cannot do so myself. . Dawn , your fourth sentence: Any examples of both extremes working in unison will also be helpful. and I think what your are contemplating is already working fabu...

For me at least that gif said so much more of what I was thinking than I could have said in a paragraph. Brilliant!

Re: I'm a philosophy virgin
. Well, the original poster left this thread long ago. Matter of fact, I think she has left the forum. . Well the original poster has not left but is standing to one side watching the "philosophers" bitch and scratch and lose the plot (as well as the thread). I had just come to the conclusion that ...

Re: Is this a philosopher
Thank you for that critique. You may be correct in that high profile Philosophers, due to the nature of their profession, are more prepared to ignore the benefits offered by society as a reward for that status. However, the "establishment" i.e. the institutions that employ them may not be so willin...

Re: Is this a philosopher
My problem with the high profile philosopher in the example is that the status they have achieved can affect their freedom of thought. i.e. Someone who has reached the dizzy heights in their profession is going to find difficulty in proposing ideas wildly at odds with "common sense" but nevertheles...

Re: I'm a philosophy virgin
Still want to lose your virginity? Sod it! I think I'll take up fishing instead. :? The posts here have been great. I have a much better understanding of the height of the mountain and it's terrain. Although daunted I am not put off. Rather, I am more infected by the enthusiasm reflected ...

Re: Iceland wants to ban Internet porn
Governments are expected to defend the people against all kinds of threats. Internal and external. Western Governments have to work within the confines of democracy which means answering to the people. If the general wave of opinion is to ban porn then that is what they will attempt to achieve. If t...

Re: Left to the free market, end up with horse meat burgers
So we are agreed? Capitalism results in corruption and horse meat in burgers. Good debate and well argued. I have learnt a lot from the experienced philosophers here.

Re: I'm a philosophy virgin
Hello Richard, I think I'd start with Nietzsche rather than philosophy. Don't let the tacit idea which gets around that Western Philosophy is the highest incarnation of philosophy or a sizable portion of it infect you. Ask trees what they think. ... Nietzsche was a philosopher and is firmly...

Re: Left to the free market, end up with horse meat burgers
The problem is that you people don't understand basic economics. All you understand is socialism, and my friends, socialism is at odds with human nature itself. Your comment is illogical as you have no idea what my knowledge and experience of economics is and you have no idea what "people" group I ...
