Re: Is becoming like God good or evil?
Then I guess that you cannot relate to the A & E myth, where as archetypes of all humans, they did. Did what? Fail? Yes they did, and so do I. I wasn't saying I was perfect. I just don't see why I should knowingly and deliberately fail. From a biblical point of view, if you are not trying to be...

Resha, thanks for this - I have allowed my subscription to lapse, so your description and thoughts about the article are fantastic Thank you. But should you admit you're now a freeloader? :) ... we should not get quite so stuck reading the stuff we like, feel comfortable with; but try to move beyon...

Re: Philosophy is One of the Greatest Disciplines to Learn
You bet. I have to make that judgment with respect to my own life, and I know my own life would be better off without a bunch of people believing in superstition in it. That's not the way I meant it, and I think you know that. But, just to be clear, I'll amend my question. Are you the judge of what...

So you are the judge of what constitutes the proper life?ForgedinHell wrote:But perhaps if I educated the person, and explained why a belief in a supernatural god was irrational, and how the person's life could be improved by walking away from such nonsense, then why shouldn't I stick my nose where it is uninvited?

Re: Are ‘Matters of Taste’ Matters of Taste?
This was an interesting article, but Langford goes about his point in an odd way. He seems to be saying that "art" is typified by an ability to identify objective criteria, and since wine-tasting can also identify objective criteria, it should be considered an art. But then he seems to say...

Re: Philosophy is One of the Greatest Disciplines to Learn
I wouldn't say it's a waste of time, but neither is it necessary ... unless one takes the position that everyone has a philosophy. But if some guy's philosophy is, "Love God and be kind to others," and for him that's the beginning and the end of it ... shrug ... let it be.

Re: Is becoming like God good or evil?
Is becoming like God, in a moral sense way, good or evil? I'm afraid my answer will only frustrate you, as this question appears to me as a false dichotomy. It would be like someone pointing at a round table and asking me if it is square or triangular. It's neither. It's round. Likewise, my answer ...

Re: Is becoming like God good or evil?
You have questioned and judged God as good yet would deny others from questioning and judging if they do not happen to agree with your view of good. This is starting to sound bitter. I did not mean to judge you, but it can be a fine line between pointing out error and being judgemental. The pot may...

Re: Is becoming like God good or evil?
Do you want your children to be less than yourself or do you want them to be as good as you are and in fact be better than what you are? It's not a valid comparison. Some day my children will supplant me. I will never supplant God. Have you forgotten that you are a God work in progress my friend? N...

Re: The Historian and the Believer
The pursuit of 'objective' history assumes the 'objective' writings of it's authors. If in fact the writers were not objective, then history can never be pursued objectively. Garbage in, garbage out, no matter how objective the reader. I suppose that's true to some extent. If there is only one sour...

Re: Jesus?
There is no way to 'know,' if in 'fact,' Jesus ever did, or did not, write anything. To say one way or the other, is to 'assume,' that historical record is necessarily accurate, without omission or addition; selective reference. One has to consider differing language translations, ones ability to a...

Re: Is becoming like God good or evil?
I'm not sure as to all the in's and out's of your two's arguments, but GIA's original post said "like GOD" not "a God." So as far as some aspects go, I could be like Abraham Lincoln, or anyone else for that matter, as any particular attribute is not exclusive to any particular i...
