Re: the easy problem of consciousness

Asking how the brain is capable of creating the experience of consciousness is not materially different from asking how the tongue produces saltiness. The pattern of nerve firings IS the thing that's being referenced, not a separate entity made of separate stuff. Actually, it is different. The easy...

He's in the Matrix.
The interesting thing about the original movie is that the Matrix is sentient. In other words, even though it is a machine it has the ability to experience.

Re: "There has never been true communism."

The slide from one to the other is very, very short. Fallacy of false equivalence. You can think so, of course. That's how many Socialists seek to avoid the unpleasant consequences of their ideology -- claim that all the "Communisms" and "Socialisms" that have existed so far, empirically, in the wh...

Re: "There has never been true communism."

I didn't say Mussolini wasn't a communist. In fact I made no reference to his earlier life. Okay, let's move on, then. The point is merely that squabbles among Socialists, Communists and Fascists are family squabbles. They are birds of a proverbial feather. Again, fallacy of false equivalence.

Re: Big Question 1

I don't speak with uwot, though. He seems determined to pick a fight with God... As Xenophanes pointed out: But mortals suppose gods are born, Wear their own clothes and have a voice and body. The Ethiopians say that their gods are flat-nosed and black, While Thracians say that theirs have blue eye...

Re: Big Question 1

Go ahead and debunk Russell's ideas. Sure. Which one? How about Russell's barber paradox? It was used by Russell to point out the contradiction contained within Cantor's naive set theory. Russell's paradox is one of my favorites. The barber paradox is a puzzle derived from Russell's paradox. It was...

Re: Big Question 1

You ought to read uwot's Bertrand Russell comment, it sums it up nicely. I did. I don't speak with uwot, though. He seems determined to pick a fight with God, and it's above my pay grade to step into a fight like that. Personally, I would wish him repentance on that, but you can't make a man do wha...

Re: "There has never been true communism."

If fascists is what you mean by socialists, then according to your description of socialists I am not a socialist. Socialism includes both Communism and Fascism. I'm glad you're not either of those. But you've got to ask yourself why that's the way the worm inevitably turns. The History Channel mak...

Re: "There has never been true communism."

Nothing you have posted here contradicts what I have said. Well, for starters, you said Mussolini wasn't a Communist. He was. His Fascism was just an expression of his already-in-place Socialism. The History Channel calls that fact surprising...I don't. I didn't say Mussolini wasn't a communist. In...

Re: Big Question 1

In other words, you are saying that my sense of well-being is delusional. I could just as easily say your sense of well-being is also delusional since it is based on a myth. You could believe that. Sure. And if your worldview were true, you would be right, just as I would be right about you if mine...

Re: "There has never been true communism."

Historically, not at all. They set them up every time. Mussolini got his start in the Italian Communists. Hitler was a National Socialist. Stalin inherited his dictatorship from Lenin et al. Look at what the Communists are doing to Hong Kong right now. Not at all, Mussolini and Hitler were fascists...

Re: Big Question 1

What's "well-being"? Hitler's version of well-being isn't yours, I trust. Nor is Stalin's, nor the Buddha's, nor Islam's. And for my part, I would never consider a man to be in a state of "wellbeing" who did not also have a right relationship with God -- that would be like claiming a man who had a ...
