Re: How does one answer Schopenhauer’s critique of the cosmological argument ?

How did the knowledge of something extra-sensory appear in your mind? I think Kant would say they were from the "categories of the understanding" by which we organize experience. Kant believed there were things which our minds brought to experience (which may or may not correlate with the things-in...

Re: How does one answer Schopenhauer’s critique of the cosmological argument ?

Does it matter what is "inside" a photon? If you want to know "the thing in itself " - it matters. For all intents and purposes, there could be nothing inside a photon. Sure. But then you have to explain how nothing causes something. Photon causes light. A noumenon is something completely removed f...

Re: How does one answer Schopenhauer’s critique of the cosmological argument ?

But a noumenon is supposed to be an unknowable "thing in itself" (as it is independent of our senses), if we know of photons and most of their properties, then is it unknowable anymore? You don't know what a photon is "in and of itself". All you know is how photons behave. You can tell me that phot...

3) Can we possibly even know there are noumena? A photon is a noumenon. Light is a phenomenon. Photons cause light. But a noumenon is supposed to be an unknowable "thing in itself" (as it is independent of our senses), if we know of photons and most of their properties, then is it unknowable anymore?

Re: The Philosophers’ Ship

It seems like the Soviets did a lot of harm in eliminating their dissenting intelligentsia. OTOH, (not to necessarily endorse totalitarianism but rather to acknowledge perhaps a bitter truth) the achievements of the Bolsheviks in transforming the Soviet Union from a primarily agrarian society into a...

Re: Pugilism v pacifism

Because by and large they don't kill each other in the ring nor are they drafted to do it. But Ali didn't go because he was a CO but because he didn't see why a black man who was treated as a second class citizen in America should have to go and kill brown men who had done him no harm. But isn't "n...

Re: How does one answer Schopenhauer’s critique of the cosmological argument ?

Classical theists make the argument for God from the contingent to the absolute, or from the conditioned to the unconditioned, like Aquinas’s 3rd way.

A devotee of Schopenhauer, I imagine, would make 3 points.
1) You cannot apply our notions of causality beyond physical reality. 2) We only know...

I find this very encouraging as I am someone with a lot of "in-spite ofs".
Yeah. Me too.

Re: "NEVER MIND THE BOLLOCKS", HERE'S THE SIMPLE TRUTH ABOUT ABORTION

I am going to tell you why the pro-life argument in the context of abortion is correct in a way that does not depend on an overtly religious commitment. The argument turns on two principles, one is biological, the other ethical. The first principle is the biological reality of the unborn child's id...

Re: Why is nazism popular today?

Found the Goethe quote: “Beauty is a manifestation of secret natural laws, which otherwise would have been hidden from us forever.” Maybe the trend of deep thought in the classicist period of the 19th century Germany was to think that our world partly derives from worlds that are beyond our comrehe...

I don't think I would take that approach regardless. For an example, If someone said "maybe flying pink fairy unicorns exist" I would probably assume they were kidding me or joking. I mean, some things sound completely fabricated and outlandish to the point of frivolity and uselessness. However, I ...

Re: What is a Soul?

I guess it would depend upon how it's framed or posited. If someone said, "maybe consciousness survives death." I might say, "maybe you are right." I don't know anything about what happens after death. What I don't think I would say is, "No. You're wrong. Consciousness does not survive death." I th...
