Re: Capitalism as a moral system

Might I point out that Spike isn't really reading anyone else's posts. If he/she had been, he/she would have seen that I addressed the question of whether the internet was 'made possible' by capitalism and would have responded in kind. ala1993 wrote: This is the classic fallacy put forward by those ...

Re: Capitalism as a moral system

Spike (who is probably a troll) wrote: capitalism is not communism! Both are sustained by an identical dogmatic logic i.e. one of exclusion and exclusivity. Alongside this, both rely on an individual self-sacrifice in order to exist in the first place (i.e. the acceptance of the 'system' as greater...

Re: Capitalism as a moral system

Capitalism, with its free market principles and the innovations it inspires, gave us the plastic water bottles that saturate the world. If I may step onto the bridge, dear goats ... This is the classic fallacy put forward by those who wish to justify a 'system' which is itself about as systematic a...

Re: smoking law abuse

Perhaps, if they said that. However, to my knowledge no law exists which prevents such activity. If it did then it would be an unjust law. Smoking can be restricted in any public space but not in private areas.

Re: The Servile Mind - How Democracy Erodes The Moral Life

I was just thinking ... what if morality can take the shape of law? By this, I mean when a 'custom' or moral principle stands opposed to 'the law' but is adhered to so vehemently and consistently that it comes to function as a law in and of itself. An example of this might be found in the discrepanc...

Re: The Servile Mind - How Democracy Erodes The Moral Life

Firstly, am I right in assuming that the passage on individualism is from the book by Richard Baron? It looks like quite an interesting read (actually, both do). Secondly, I'm interested in what you think about how the abstract character of law, perhaps along with 'opening up scope for innovation', ...

Hmm ... doesn't it look like I wrote my latest comment apropos of nothing, rather than responding to a possibly sarcastic post implying that I haven't posted anything up about the book yet! Curious ...

Re: Does Surveillance Make Us Morally Better?

Perhaps morality implies surveillance. By this, I mean a certain degree of self and public supervision where we are concerned about the behaviour of ourselves and others. As such, it is not morality but rather surveillance which comes first - the latter is the condition for the former insofar as mor...

Re: Capitalism and Schizophrenia

Ok, so I realise it's been a while and I said I'd try and post something up last week; I've been trawling through the first chapter of the book and keep returning to the same problem: what, exactly, is 'the body without organs'? At first, I thought it to be any event (set of circumstances) which in ...

Zizeks 'On Violence'

I'm about to start reading Zizek's book 'On Violence' as part of my PhD research and wondered if there's anyone who would be willing to read it alongside me, offering their thoughts on his claims. Let me know if you're interested.
