Philosophy Now website - NEW DESIGN LAUNCHED

Yesterday the new design of the Philosophy Now website went live. The Forum stays the same, but everything else on the site gets a new look. All feedback and constructive/non-obscene criticism warmly welcomed!

Issue 121 - Radical Theories of Consciousness

Hi folks, If you are on your summer vacation, then I hope you are having a wonderful time. No doubt as you lie upon your sunlounger gazing up at the azure sky, even the swaying trees and the golden sun itself seem to smile benevolently down upon you. What better than to repay their kind interest by ...

Re: Philosophy Now Forum Suggestions Box

Would it be also a good idea to have sub forums based on the periods too? For example, Ancient Medieval Modern Contemporary I quite like the idea but it could be tricky to have sub forums based both on subject matter and on historical period. For example, would something on Parfit's last book on et...

Re: New feature: comment count on articles

Sorry to hear that - how frustrating! However, I have told Anja that you enjoyed her article. It's hard to know exactly what went wrong. Possibly you clicked the "Discuss" button on the article, thus auto creating a discussion thread, but then took more than 24 hours to post, in which case the threa...

New feature: comment count on articles

Our illustrious digital editor has just introduced a new feature on the Philosophy Now website. As many here know, if you go to an article on the Philosophy Now website there is always a "Discuss" link in the top right hand corner. If you click that, it brings you here to the forum, to the discussio...

Re: What is a quantum computer?

Have you read David Deutsch's work on this subject? Just in case it is useful to this discussion, here is a link to an interview with David Deutsch that we published in Philosophy Now a few years ago, on the topic of quantum computing. The interviewer was Filiz Peach. https://philosophynow.org/issu...

Re: Ludwig Wittgenstein (1889-1951)

I don't get it about Ludwig Wittgenstein. What is the big deal? One thing he says is "the world is not made up of things, it is made up of facts" But things and facts are much the same. Wars were things and they certainly proved to be facts. Sometimes I wonder about philosophers. Facts and things c...

Re: Got any good jokes?

Here's a whole page of philosophy lightbulb jokes we published in Philosophy Now about 17 years ago. I think we originally got most of them off the internet, though.... https://philosophynow.org/issues/25/The_Inevitable_Philosophy_Lightbulb_Jokes My personal favourite: Q. How many analytic philosoph...

Re: Am I a man or a woman?

This thread and in particular the discussion between vegetariantaxidermy, Harbal and ForCruxSake is now closed. As general advice to forum users: do please try to treat each other with a little more respect, even if you feel that "they started it". If you don't feel able to rebuff their ignorant bar...

True. I tried to work his famous quotation about rights into my editorial, but it didn't work out.

Re: Do we need more Philosophy Presence on Social Media i.e the popular instagram??

Hi Jeina, Philosophy Now magazine itself has an Instagram account. We've only had it for a few months and we use it to post photos of front covers and so on. We have about 1,700 followers so far. I don't know much about how to promote an Instagram account, except that my colleague Katy, who runs the...

Re: The Celtic Goddess: Ancasta

Understood. I will now need to research more discovered inscriptions where someone of a Roman name, likely someone within the Roman legion, someone with authority practically kissed the arse of a foreign deity. Salve! Thanks for an interesting discussion. It inspired me to look up a couple of relat...

Re: Free Will vs Determinism

There's some interesting and nuanced discussion in this thread. I'm almost embarrassed to intrude to point out that we're currently running a basic opinion poll about free will and determinism on Twitter. https://twitter.com/PhilosophyNow/status/834927385464221697 The question is: Do we freely choos...

Re: The Conscious Mind by David Chalmers

I wrote a nice long post here (I thought) about Chalmers and Kripke that I won't try to duplicate. Maybe I hit the wrong button or something and erased it. The long and short of it was that I have the book on my Kindle and would enjoy a conversation about it; and that it would be great if Gingko go...
