Re: hi i am back

From memory, Bill Bryson in his book "Mother Tongue" speculates that Yankees is derived from the Dutch "Jan Kees" meaning "John Cheese", apparently the name of a sort of stock character in Dutch culture. If correct, this would mean that the word Yankees dates back to the time of the Dutch colonies i...

Not much gender philosophy in here. I mean there is some, but not very much at all. So I'm moving this thread to the Lounge.

Re: Philosophy Now website - NEW DESIGN LAUNCHED

Thanks for the colour advice. I would just point out that US news reports about American politics often talk about red states and blue states. The "blue states" are the ones that tend to vote Democrat, while the "red states" are the ones that habitually vote Republican - ie they are the more right w...

Re: God and Evil

Dr. Abimbola, the singular of 'phenomena' is 'phenomenon'. I resent your winning a PhD and not using proper English. I must leap to the defence of the excellent Dr Abimbola. That error may well have been mine. The article in question dates from 1993. Back then, very few people submitted articles to...

Re: S'mae/Hi

Welcome, Iolo. I vaguely recalled that Plato suggested in The Republic that philosophy was only for those over the age of fifty. So I checked the text at http://classics.mit.edu/Plato/republic.mb.txt but this is the nearest I could find to him saying that: And how long is this stage of their lives t...

Re: Problem accessing the PN site.

Yes, it was the Illuminati. Actually no, we didn't spot the problem, partly because the site happened to be going down during the night (UK time). Then our webmaster Bora spotted the very useful posts in this thread, describing the problem. Then the site went down again for a couple of hours today, ...

Re: How was the 4th PHILOSOPHY NOW FESTIVAL?

Some follow-up or closure for those hapless ones of the site (including myself) who could not attend would be nice. A description, maybe a few anecdotes, then some anti-dotes to the anecdotes would be nice. And the speeches, the biggest thing that everyone walked away with. Or not. SOMETHING fer cr...

Re: Philosophy Now Forum Suggestions Box

Have you considered marketing the official Philosophy Now Hemlock Mugs? Marketing would be directed at all those who haven't sold out to the Great Beast and keep Socrates' ideas alive regardless of how they are condemned by the modern secular educated. Of course these mugs wouldn't really be used f...

Re: Suicide by Cop by Troubled Activist

I vaguely remember that at my first university, UMIST, there were a couple of bored security guards who spent the night dozing in a little hut by the main entrance to the campus, and occasionally wandered around campus with a torch. This was a city centre campus, after all. Nobody would have dreamed...

If someone developed a world view which was internally and externally consistent, logically necessary in every respect, used common English for most purposes, could be explained at any level of detail, was perfectly compatible with the best understandings of science, and which answers the vast majo...
