Re: New to Philosophy Now

Let me defend good old Plato a little bit. If a farmer, while ploughing for hours, asks himself: what do I live for ? And answers: I want to have children and grand-children and retire with enough means to lead a secure life and to smoke a pipe every evening, then he has examined his life, has he no...

Re: Hello all, I'm nameless...

You have detected wrongly this time, Mr. Sherlock Holmes.
There was no sarcasm in my statement about Wootah.

I am not going to spend hours thinking about who you are. An impression will impose itself on my mind, when I read your posts, whether I want it or not. (If I read your posts.)

Good night !

Re: New to Philosophy Now

Before critisizing and getting annoyed I like to try to understand the point of view in question. Here: instead of examining life in an ivory tower we should grasp it intuitively like a savage in the jungle. We would then know what life is all about: survival of the fittest, anxieties, hunger, thirs...

Re: Hello all, I'm nameless...

Are we invited to give you names, Captain Nemo ?
You could judge from them what impression you make.

Talking on an anonymous forum is like participating in a masked ball. Everyone is wearing a mask, but you can guess the personality of the masked danser a little bit, especially from what he says.

Re: Hello all, I'm nameless...

You give personal information even if you do not want to, indirectly and inspite of yourself. English is your first language and your spelling is good, it seems to me, but I am not best qualified to judge it here, since English is my third language. You could be a middle-class Brit. Do you use the w...

Re: Philosophy of Mind

But not every rich person indulges in luxury. Many go travelling around the world and have to deal with dangers and hardships. Another example: Prince Charles. When he was at a boarding school (Eton probably) he woke up and there was snow on his bed. And now he experiments with organic farming and g...

Re: THE LIFE OF THE MIND - On the joys and Travails of Thinking

However, understanding is not always joyful, as psychiatrists will tell you.
That is why so many people try to escape unpleasant truths (about themselves) and live in denial. This is a mechanism which serves their protection. Otherwise they might commit suicide.

Re: Current Reads: What is Everyone Reading?

"The Wings of the Dove" by Henry James. Kate Croy wants to satisfy everyone in the world, for example her greedy family, who push her into the arms of a rich aunt because they want the money for themselves. She has a young friend and admirer (there were no boyfriends in those days, I suppose) who kn...

Re: On Time and Archaeology

The past exists a little bit in the memory as a memory.
Which is not nothing if you consider an idea to be something.

Where does the future exist, I am not sure.

Nothing more ... at all ?
No more food even ?
One American yoga lady survived without eating for a whole year.
But she must have drunk some water.

Re: Current Reads: What is Everyone Reading?

Can you give some examples ? Does he mention things like feng-shui ? There is also a book: "Simplify your life" which I have not read. One idea: you can simplify your life by not reading all the books that are worth it but by letting your friends tell you the quintessence of them instead.
