Re: Unproven assumptions

When I said "unproven assumptions" I wanted to stress one characteristic of them which seemed important to me to point out in this context. We could try to formulate more precisely: let´s look for assumptions in sentences or utterances, which are by the way by definition unproven. There. Are assumpt...

Re: Happiness of Pursuit.

I learned to simultaneously walk and read as a youngster, so I could read more. I thought nothing of it until I did it as an adult and was met with incredulity. Now, they're making it illegal in places (reading phones), or trying to. The senses learn to simultaneously scan the surroundings and comp...

Re: Unproven assumptions

Perhaps there is a misunderstanding. I don´t quite see a difference between an assumption and a presumption. In a syllogism it is an unproven premise. What we assume to be true is only visible in our utterances. We cannot be sure what other people assume just like this, by intuition or whatever. We ...

Re: I'm back.

Are you changing your life style somehow ? Do you have a lesson for us ? Some illnesses are undeserved, some are predictable. I for example don´t have a hunch yet, but sometimes I see an elderly person so hunched that they cannot straighten up again any more so I am motivated to do something to avoi...

Re: Happiness of Pursuit.

Thanks for the calculations Walker.

Do you have some walking achievements of your own ?

One might walk the island Great Britain along the shore, it would take a about a year I suppose, without haste and with bird watching.
Or the island Guernsey or Australia.

Re: Happiness of Pursuit.

How long could a person stand on one foot ?
Reaching 24 hours without a break would be a kind of record and thus a pursuit if one trains every day to get to this result.

Re: Happiness of Pursuit.

I meant the length that is like the length of the eqator.

We could take the distance to the moon or to the sun.
How many marathons would it be ? Would a life span of a human being be enough ?

Re: Unproven assumptions

You are assuming that statements can be something more than communications. What makes you think that I assume this ? And what is this something more ? Let me try to find some assumptions in your sentence or statement. You assume that to me statements and communications are not the same thing...

Re: Unproven assumptions

Scott

I assume that someone can read my sentence ?
No, I hope so but if I am wrong then the truth value of the sentence does not change.

I assume that someone will answer it ?
No, I only hope so.

Please point out some other assumptions if you see any.

Re: Happiness of Pursuit.

Walk around the world, along the equator, on your step machine placed under the table.

How many steps (60 centimeters each) would it take to walk the length of the equator ?

There is also the wearable measuring the steps which I don´t know from personal experience.

Unproven assumptions

It seems to me that most of what we say if full of unproven assumptions. The sentence I have just written does not assume anything because of the introduction unit "it seems to me". The second sentence I have just written does not assume anything either, because it is purely analytical. Or do you se...

A pursuit of what you feel like pursuing. A man in Korea did a Refusal Therapy. He made unreasonable requests (asked in restaurants to allow him to cook his own meal, asked policemen to allow him to sit in their cars) and endured the refusals. Birdwatching and ultrarunning and sailing around the wor...

Happiness of Pursuit.

I read about it in a book by Chris Guillebeau. I have not yet finished the book. Do you have any pursuits that make your life interesting and worth living ? Guillebeau himself wanted to go to all 192 countries in the world and he did. John Francis decided to walk everywhere and he did, for example 2...
