The Monadology

I'm considering diving into Leibniz's Monadology to take a break from reading Wittgenstein's Tractatus. What are your opinions on it?

Re: Can a hotdog ever be a sandwich?

Put it on a table and ask someone to pass you the sandwich. You'll have your answer.

Re: Is Food Art?

Is this what art is, then? Judgement and value? And anything which can be judged and valued can be considered art?

Re: Jesus was a Jew. Why do some Christians and Muslims hate Jews?

I would urge you to change your style, then, as philosophical discussion seems to be hinged on the principle of charity if convincing others is any goal of ours , and being uncharitable makes it difficult not just for another person to want to continue speaking on a subject, but creates an unnecessa...

Re: Was Jesus born with Original Sin?

We might have to define human here. We are born as babies after intercourse. A & E do not fit that description and were not the same type of human we are. Some as called jokers for asking if Adam had a belly button, but if he did not, he was not our kind of human. In fact, if you follow the rib wom...

Re: I am my highest authority, judge and guide. Who is yours?

God is my highest authority. If I am subject to a human judge concerning the laws made by other men (which I am obliged to obey), then how more so am I subject to the Creator of all?

So you consider yourself a god? This sounds more Mormon than Gnostic, so perhaps you could elaborate.

Re: Can a man really turn into a woman?

If by gender we refer to being the male or female sex (and how could it refer to anything else when our language assumes a connection between “female”, “male” and “gender”?), then, no.

I'm Bakhita

Hello all. I'm calling myself Bakhita. I'm a philosophy major at a private university. I don't know how to describe my "philosophy" except that I'm Catholic, with everything that means. I'm graduating this semester and am writing my thesis, and this semester looks like it'll be fairly exciting. My p...

Re: Why Jesus didnt convinced the judge?

It would have been very odd for him to try and save his life, considering that he'd prophesied his own death before entering Jerusalem. As for the phrase, "Why have you forsaken me?", it comes from psalm 22, which opens, "My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?" , alludes to the lots cast for his...

Re: Jesus was a Jew. Why do some Christians and Muslims hate Jews?

Christians and Muslims aren't immune from irrationality and hate. I would caution against presenting such hatred as "normal", however, as I haven't witnessed it except online by such groups as Westboro baptist (who, in their defense, seem to hate everyone equally). I would also be careful in attribu...

Re: Was Jesus born with Original Sin?

Was Jesus born with Original Sin? If so, then he could not be the perfect sacrifice. If not, then he had no human side and was pure god, and god cannot die which, makes the sacrifice a lie. Could these facts be why the Jews have no Original Sin concept in their religion? Is that also why Jews rejec...

Is Food Art?

I'm interested to see opinions here. "It is commonly supposed that the idea of taste is only a metaphor and can be applied chiefly to choices one makes in the arts of sight and sound" , so says William Fretter, but how many here would say that we can understand taste literally and allow food to have...
