Re: Individualism vs. Collectivism

Dear IC, Just to observe a little propriety, which is so much missing these days. I'll get right to the point, Okay: but why are we the kinds of creatures that can be deceived in that way? How is it, we might ask, that we are so often wrong in our relation to moral judgments, to others, and to the w...

Re: Individualism vs. Collectivism

But, in the end, a collective never hurts anyone; individuals do. Outstanding! One rarely sees such a manifestly untrue statement offered with such conviction. :D You answered to quickly, IC. f12hte is right. It is only individuals that do harm. It is only individuals that do anything. The collecti...

Re: Individualism vs. Collectivism

I'll begin with where we agree, IC Yes, I agree. A standard defines the "good" or "bad" of a thing. It's the legitimacy of the particular standard that has to be settled. The goal in itself can be "good" or "evil," for instance, regardless of the efficacy of the measure in achieving it. "Good" gas ...

Re: Individualism vs. Collectivism

Hi IC, I'm only going to comment on a couple of things that perhaps have been misunderstood, or not made clear. Otherwise, you've made you points, and I've made mine, and where we do not agree, I don't think we're going to, which of course is not so important as keeping the discourse cordial and int...

Re: Individualism vs. Collectivism

Pain's not, but what about the desire for addiction? What about attraction to violence, deceit, anger or to harmful sexual experiences? Can we really doubt that those things are desires that are morally bad, whether or not they are acted upon? And somebody whose mind was preoccupied with such desir...

Re: Individualism vs. Collectivism

I do not agree that the, "attractiveness," is itself sinful. Well, could I test that? Do you think that when a gambler is attracted to the table, or an alcoholic to the bottle, that's good? Of course you can test it, IC. I believe the context is, "sin," not "good and bad." It is not good to be sick...

Re: Individualism vs. Collectivism

In fact, without human freedom and choice, I would argue we could have no human responsibility either -- and unless I miss my guess, you're on that page too. Yes, exactly! The fact that the Bible states that everyone sins can easily be attributed to God's foreknowledge. Well, yes: but not exclusive...

Re: Individualism vs. Collectivism

For now I'll only say a capacity to do something is not a propensity or inclination to do it. No such inclination is necessary, unless you believe Adam was created with an inclination to sin. Adam's a unique case, obviously. Nobody but he (and Eve) are described as having experienced a state of glo...

Re: Individualism vs. Collectivism

Well, if human beings aren't born with the capacity to sin, from where does it come? For now I'll only say a capacity to do something is not a propensity or inclination to do it. No such inclination is necessary, unless you believe Adam was created with an inclination to sin. Watch a child who has ...

Re: Individualism vs. Collectivism

If we were always inclined to do the right thing, then we would never need ethics...we would just always do right, and we wouldn't say "That was moral," just "That's what we did." So the inclination to do wrong is also in humans. That's also clear Hi IC, (Do you mind if I use that? I don't mean i n...

Re: There is no emergence

Consciousness to me is the ability of the mind. My cat is conscious, but she doesn't have a mind. The mind is the unique kind of consciousness which only human beings have. The mind is the intellectual and rational aspects of human consciousness. There is no such thing as smell. If there isn't, whe...

Re: There is no emergence

The interaction between a gas and a sensor is purely electromagnetic. That's only one way to detect some chemicals. There are other better methods, such as gas chromatography, atomic absorption spectroscopy, and atomic emission spectroscopy, but no such method has anything to do with taste or smell...

Re: Individualism vs. Collectivism

Aw, I think you're being a bit hard on Nick, RC. People come from all sorts of places, and I don't mind talking with somebody who has views different from mine, whether on "religion" or on anti-"religion." In fact, it was in the hope of having those sorts of conversations I joined this discussion i...

Re: There is no emergence

That would be good if true. Just what tool do you have that is not skeptical, that is, that you can rely on to discover unquestioned truth? In your view, is there anything one can know is true with complete certainty and without doubt? "truth" is a rather overused phrase. It means very many things ...
