Re: There is no proof that separate identity exists.

Only one way to establish personal identity, and that is through the ethical dimension of our being here. The harm one person experiences is that person's harm (or joy, and so forth) exclusively. Torture me and it is not some floating body of incidentals tagged "mine" but is the Real that is in the ...

Re: The Funny "Worshipping" of Nietzsche

Necromancer By plausibility, I do think Kantianism the best. The democratic laws and regulations are well inside Kantian ethics and morality. When have you complained about the traffic regulations by your driver's license? Never? :D Thus, the alleged Nietzschean "superior" ethics (and morality) nev...

Re: Something to think about

prof: Obviously Levinas is using the phrase "self interest" to mean what I mean by the term "selfishness." Do you, after thinking deeply about it, believe that self-interest has to be exclusive of the other person? Is it not in your self interest to live in a world surrounded by others who bless th...

Re: Religious lies. Why do we knowingly accept them?

Greatest I am Indeed. I cannot understand how anyone can intentionally put their minds into intellectual and moral dissonance. But dissonance is what YOU have when you bring your mentality to bear upon what is at issue, that is, religious ideas. In the mind of the believer, there is none of this. I...

Re: Something to think about

prof I disagree with this usage of "self interest"; some of the confusion may reside in the difficulty of translation from the German tongue into English. No. Kant was very big on this notion of denying desire and and insistent that the condition of a moral is that it must be disinterested altogeth...

Re: Something to think about

prof: Authenticity and flourishing are ideals for the ethical life of an individual. We are authentic when we are true to our own true self: when our behavior and habits match our own self-ideals. Then the person is in balance. Then one has reduced his own hypocrisy. He “walks the talk.” He lives w...

Re: Is Number a Causal Element?

Of course number is a causal element. The question is, what is causality? Once you realize you don't know this, then this obviates mind body matters altogether. Such questions manufacture issues out of nothing since they presuppose conditions that are ill defined in the first place.

Re: The Funny "Worshipping" of Nietzsche

Eodnhoj7: One should remember that Ethics is indeed the description of good to be carried out as morality. While Christianity is most excellent, we now attribute the best Ethics to Kantianism, in my opinion, no other ethics to this quality described to this extent. Why oh why would you think Kantia...

Re: an obituary of emotions

waechter418 : Concerning Self-realization, the most misleading emotions are wishes & hopes, as they stir the belief of Homo to be able to be someone else than he is. When you discard emotions as interfering and undermining you fail to conceive of emotions as such, that is, what they are in themselv...

Re: Religious lies. Why do we knowingly accept them?

It is your own understanding that is the cause of the problem. After all, a religious lie is the sort of thing that has its reach into something that does not lend itself to examination, that is, at its core. It is the kind of thing that carries metaphysical value that redeems. The matter really goe...

Re: MAN and LANGUAGE by Max Picard

tbieter What do you think is the origin of language in say, for purposes of the concrete in discussion, a small child? Is language a gift to human beings? A gift? You mean are we fortunate to have it. It depends on how it is used, but in itself, it is, as Hume said, an empty vessel with no favorite...

Re: Can we be rational without language?

wtf: Is it simply harder or impossible to reason without language? Begs the question, doesn't it: What is language? That is, can you even conceive of language without reason? Think Kantian here: language has its expression in judgment, which is, say, the evidence before us. Is judgment possible wit...

Re: What does silence mean?

Or, silence is in play against noise such that noise would be a vacuous concept without it, much like 'up' means nothing without 'down'. As such, we think of it as an interpretative designation that makes possible discussion and possible meaning vis a vis noise/sound and the like. Silence is thus is...

Re: Symbols: Art as Logic, Logic as Art

Eodnhoj7Axioms: are the synthesis of symbols and in this respect, all logic has an informal element of art. However, art as an expression of truth is art as objectivity where "existence is identity." (Rand, For the New Intellectual) and "Percepts, not sensations, are the given, the self-evident." (R...
