Re: Important notice to everyone

Now, when I say that these good moods/feelings sustain this perceptual quality of good value/worth in our lives, this perceptual quality is not a thought/outlook at all. As I said before, thoughts/outlooks alone do not give us this perceptual quality in our lives. This means that our good moods/fee...

Re: Let Go Let God. Why dying is so very hard to do.

It's so very hard for us to die because psychology has evolved in such a way to make it hard to do.

Re: Re:

I would prefer more rehabilitation focusing than corporal punishment in the prisons themselves, as I suggested. Consult with phychologists, and possibly psychiatrists, ensure that prisons actually protect the people inside them, and a few other measures I'm sure I'm forgetting. That's what I would ...

Re: God; a good father or a deadbeat dad. Which is the truth?

Simple. It is not doing unto others as he killed instead of cured. My moral sense has yet to be proven wrong. While that's likely true given his omnipotence, that's likely not how the christian god sees it. That's not how logic works. The burden of proof is on you to prove that your moral sense nec...

Re: Re:

No one in their right mind takes the idea of 'torture by rape' seriously We do all kinds of things that you wouldn't think people would take seriously. :) So, what's your idea for deterring rape? What we do now is actually pretty effective vs other leading nations, when you look into the real rape ...

Re: Re:

How do you figure that? I think it would be a good deterrent. No one in their right mind takes the idea of 'torture by rape' seriously; The biggest neocons wouldn't sign off on it. I would actually argue that the very existence of a sort of rape farm would be proof against its effectiveness. Obviou...

Re: Important notice to everyone

Responding to me asking why our good moods are the only things that matter with "Our good moods/feelings are the only things that can give our lives a real perceptual quality" is pretty much circular reasoning. The point is that good moods are good because 'people consider them good' and Pol Pot con...

Re: A discussion of the criteria you believe an ethical theory is supposed to have

Yes, that's true. The system offered integrates Consequentialist concepts with Deontological concepts with Virtue Theory concepts with Shinto and Confucius concepts. Consequentialism has evolved from Utilitarianism, as you know. As I was replying to more of your comment, I had to look back to read ...

Re: God; a good father or a deadbeat dad. Which is the truth?

It doesn't really matter what I think, if I assume that the God of the bible exists, I don't think it would be wise to use your own moral intuitions to judge him. If we're assuming that the bible is true as a source in general, than they would say he's necessarily a benevolent being. Having said, I...

What is the point to worshipping God?

Obviously this is a pretty common idea among organised religion. I think some people can defend this idea with some reasons that I could understand, but there are some reasons that don't seem to make any sense. The most intuitive reason to why worship is done seems to be that it's a way to physicall...

Re:

Should a person be legally obligated to render assistance? Nope. It would be nice if folks did assist, but expressions of compassion are -- by defintion -- voluntary. Compelled action is a kind of slavery. So: shun the teens, if you like, but don't prosecute them. Pretty much my fears about the iss...

Re: What do you think of Good-Samaritan laws?

If it's absolutely clear who did it, and that it was a horrendous act against another, just sentence them already... in a way that delivers uniquely appropriate retribution for the behavior/deed. The point is, sentence them under what charge? What's the crime? Stupidity? Non-action indicates indiff...
