Immanuel Can wrote: you'll discover that "right" and "wrong," "good" and "evil" are adjectives. The only debatable point is whether or not those adjectives refer to real properties. I disagree. Kant made the same mistake as Aristotle, confusing the (possibly factual) reason for making a moral judgement with the judgement itself.

Re: What could make morality objective?

The quotations are a bit muddled here, but I think who says what is clear enough. But this assumes that there is indeed something to be known: an object of some kind that verifies the assertion slavery is wrong and falsifies the assertion slavery is right - or, perhaps, vice versa. But what is the o...

Re: What could make morality objective?

Sorry if these have already been mentioned - but two texts have interesting and evidenced (if not flawless) arguments on the question of our moral progress: 'The Better Angels of Our Nature - Why Violence Has Declined', Steven Pinker, 2011 'The Moral Arc - How Science Leads Humanity Toward Truth, Ju...

Re: What could make morality objective?

Just a sidebar on the mistaken view that moral subjectivism entails moral nihilism. Moral nihilism is the meta-ethical view that nothing is morally right or wrong. But if things cannot be morally right or wrong – or if moral rightness and wrongness are not properties that things can have – the claim...

Re: What could make morality objective?

Veritas Aequitas Since we can't derive an ought from an is , any supposed moral law or precept must be based on a value-judgement. I think Kant's confusion came from his residual Christian theism. First there is no ontological absolute law, i.e. the ones commanded by a God. Kant actually condemned ...

Re: Is morality objective or subjective?

Hi, uwot. It seems to me that you and I disagree as to why moral objectivism is a mistake. You say this to Mr Can: uwot wrote: So if you want to demonstrate that morality is objective, you have to show that your arguments for the existence of this "Supreme Giver" are "100% reliable". Even if you cou...

Re: Is morality objective or subjective?

Gentle Reader To make their case, moral objectivists have simply to show how a moral assertion, such as 'slavery is wrong', is factual - how it makes a factual claim which is true or false. Just one demonstration would clinch the argument. The case against moral objectivism is simple: moral assertio...

Re: Is morality objective or subjective?

Immanuel Can So, to clarify, you can't show how a moral assertion expresses a falsifiable factual claim with a truth-value - but you don't mind that you can't. You think it could be true but unfalsifiable (but then how is it verifiable?), or it could be probabilistic (but then, how is the probabilit...

Re: Is morality objective or subjective?

Immanuel Can Perhaps we've finally found the root of your misunderstanding. I ask you to show THAT there is an objective moral standard by which the assertion 'slavery is right' can be shown to be factually false. And you reply that IF THERE IS A GOD, it would be or be the source of the objective mo...

Re: Is morality objective or subjective?

Immanuel Can More sophistry. Of course you don't have to do the following. 1 Show that there is an objective moral standard by which the assertion 'slavery is right' can be shown to be factually false. 2 Show that there is an infallible source of factual truth. 3 Show that factual assertions are tru...

Re: Is morality objective or subjective?

Immanuel Can I have no interest in your evasions and sophistries. As ever, you have to answer two questions. 1 How does a moral assertion expressing a value judgement, such as 'slavery is wrong', make a falsifiable factual claim? 2 How does the source of a supposedly factual assertion have any beari...
