Re: Prayer, Meditation and the Spiral Effect

What is prayer? Is it petitionary? Petitonary prayer is reasonable only as insofar as e.g. The Lord's Prayer is non-specific. Apart from petitionary prayer, prayer might be a form of trying to address what one takes to be the better part of one's psyche. I am in favour of this sort of prayer only if...

Re: A Stoic Response To The Climate Crisis

Nick wrote: From Wiki The subjects of Ecclesiastes are the pain and frustration engendered by observing and meditating on the distortions and inequities pervading the world, the uselessness of human deeds, and the limitations of wisdom and righteousness. Sculptor that is shocking and dispiriting about you friend the nurse having to endure abuse. I am afraid the ignorant rabble are always going to be with us. I do hope he knows he holds the moral high ground.

It remains to be seen what society as a whole does. Who is going to write the history of man after man is gone?

Immanuel Can, it is capitalism that powers the establishment of factories where wild animals are farmed for food. Wild animals were the source of the mutated coronavirus.
You mean in that hive of capitalist conspiracy, Wuhan, China?
China's capitalism is state capitalism.

Re: A Stoic Response To The Climate Crisis

Nick quoted: Religion in so far as it is a source of consolation is a hindrance to true faith; and in this sense atheism is a purification. I have to be an atheist with that part of myself which is not made for God. Among those in whom the supernatural part of themselves has not been awakened, the a...

Re: A Stoic Response To The Climate Crisis

Henry Quirk commented satirically on how somebody was excluded from expressing opinions that students disapproved of. Your socialism is not welcome, your communism is not welcome, your collectivism is not welcome, you are not welcome. Homophobia, sexism, and racism are not results of mental reflectio...

Nick , the chariot analogy : both or all of the horses represent the passions and the driver represents reason. You will see the horses are the motive force for change and the driver governs the wild strength of the passions.

Re: A Stoic Response To The Climate Crisis

Walker , racism, sexism, and homophobia are not "conservative" . Persons who promote racism, sexism, and homophobia when they are given a voice are would-be rabble rousers.

Re: A Stoic Response To The Climate Crisis

Walker, I can see from your point of view as you explain it. It is however incomplete. "The university" is more than bricks and mortar as you will agree. What you omit is "the university" is also a community of free individuals who are free to think, and even free to speak and to publish their thoug...
