His speeches are packed. The Republicans may just form a third party.

So easy and so shallow to say Americans are so stupid.

Re: Can words affect reality?

Words from God can affect your reality. They can be positive AND negative - they can seriously affect your emotions. They can also help along the realization that you are not this body only. From the time they could walk, I’ve addressed my children as Miss and Sir, and I didn't name my boys Sue. La...

Re: Can words affect reality?

Can words affect reality? Frequently, critics of President Obama assert that, instead of action, he gives a speech and expects that his words will change reality. The critics don't elaborate. Nor do the Obama defenders. As a realist, I find this curious. Sure, words affect reality. It comes from th...

Re: Roger Scruton likes Dirty Dancing - Shock, Horror !

In the essay, entitled Dancing Properly, he continues: “They are dancing at each other. The difference between ‘at’ and ‘with’ is one of the deepest psychological differences we know. It is exemplified in all our encounters with other people – notably in conversation and in sexual gambits … States ...

Re: What accounts for the fact that some students are super-devoted and therefore wholesome and some are not?

The second sentence is as close to a fact as it is possible to get. The world did not begin with your birth from nothing. You speak of the past. At this moment the stars may exist, maybe not. When you leave the shelter of roof and walls, maybe the world you know will still exist, maybe not. After y...

Re: being hu'man is what we do.

At ~ the 43 minute mark in the URL I provided, and probably no one looked at, there's an example of what would appear to be a crow funeral. Not a lot of formality but there is certainly something in their behavior of acknowledgement to a fallen comrade. Their version of a moment of silence. Crows k...

Re: What accounts for the fact that some students are super-devoted and therefore wholesome and some are not?

Recently "literally" has accepted the change to it more common use "figuratively". Duality ends at non-duality. So does mind end when duality ends. So does existence end when duality ends. Literally. I meant literally. Existence as a human requires awareness that differentiates existence from chaos...

Re: being hu'man is what we do.

I've personally witnessed a crow funeral, which is a truly a very spooky sight. I use the term "crow" somewhat loosely because that's what the native sub-species is commonly called in these parts. Strictly speaking this is inaccurate because they're actually a type of raven. I never heard of that. ...

Re: being hu'man is what we do.

We had crows roosting in the pine trees behind the house. They’re quite the polluters. So one evening when most of them had settled in to roost, I shone one of those laser pointers into the trees. Hundreds of them spontaneously burst out of the leaves with a lot of racket. They found other trees for...

Evolution moves from simple to complex.

Entropy moves from complex to simple.

Do you use “closed system” to explain away the contradiction?

Re: What's the most interesting philosophical thing you've ever heard?

Yes I can buy that and intuition is a useful enough word to define it. I rely heavily on intuition myself although its not a lot of use in philosophy unless you can find a way to structure your intuitions into a coherent procedure of thought, which is no easy task. Integrating the unknown. It’s fol...
