Re: Is morality objective or subjective?
Why do you only refer to the choice between "good" and "evil"; do we not also have the freedom to choose between things like having a hot dog or a hamburger? Moral choices, obviously. Aesthetic and gustatory choices don't ordinarily implicate any moral status...well, unless you ...

Re: Is morality objective or subjective?
If it's a false dichotomy, you should have no problem at all showing that it is.Peter Holmes wrote: ↑Thu Apr 18, 2024 4:20 pm Peddling the same false dichotomy, the same counterfeit coin. Boring.
Explain, then, why a subjectivist has any justification to condemn or advocate somebody else's actions, with no appeal to moral objectivity.

Re: Is morality objective or subjective?
When God first created everything and set it all in motion, did he incorporate into his creation the potential for chance and randomness? Not "randomness," per se. Volition. That is, he created beings that could choose freely to do His will, or to do that which is actually contrary to wha...

Re: Is morality objective or subjective?
To repeat. IC's theistic moral objectivism amounts to the following valid syllogism. (IC likes syllogisms.) P1 If my team's god says X is morally right/wrong, then (it's a fact that) X is morally right/wrong. P2 My team's god says X is morally right/wrong. C Therefore, (it's a fact that) X is moral...

Re: Is morality objective or subjective?
If I have the power to prevent an immoral/wicked/evil act, and I don't prevent it, then I am immoral/wicked/evil. And, of course, moral objectivists agree. But IC's team believes its god has that power - but worships it as the source of all goodness. Moral conclusion? You'd better include more data...

Re: Is morality objective or subjective?
Sorry to butt into your conversation, but not sorry enough to stop me from doing it. :D Go ahead. When God first created everything and set it all in motion, did he incorporate into his creation the potential for chance and randomness? Not "randomness," per se. Volition. That is, he creat...

Re: Is morality objective or subjective?
When I use the word "coercion," all I'm signifying is the belief that an external force (we could say it's God, or material causality, or even quantum mechanics) is supposed to be the real, ultimate, final explanation for what human beings do. In fact, anything other than the explanation ...

Re: How do we make peace?
The world is in a difficult place right now. What can each of us do to keep it from teetering off its axis? Thoughts? Suggestions? I try to stay indoors as much as possible, so as not to make things any worse. Two raised fingers...in a "V," of course. ✌️ Child of the '60s. Sorry.

BTW, I don’t see any reason why you couldn’t‘ve had this same discussion with IC. He/she seems like a very reasonable chap. Well, I'm a "he," actually. A "chap," as you say...and I try to live up to the term "reasonable." But thanks. Yes. You are generally reasonable. ...

Re: Faith: Difficult but Necessary?
Apparently, I am. I was hoping to find more reasonable people here. Many are but not all. Well, that's no doubt true. But I don't think you're right to assume that's what's going on in the present case. "Reasonable" means "willing to be governed by reason," not "unthinkingl...

Then find something better to do that harass me over a post calling for peace. All you want to do is make me look stupid for whatever reason. I'm not harassing you, Gary. Yes. You are. The fact that you don't realize it speaks volumes. About you being oversensitive? Maybe. Not about me harassing yo...

Re: Faith: Difficult but Necessary?
I have no idea what your problem is with my post. I just want peace in the world. Apparently you don't. I didn't say that. All I asked is how you were going to turn this "want" into something more than a mere wish. Wishes are free. Solutions are hard. Then find something better to do that...
