Re: Calvin on the Sensus Divinitatis

Just started reading this thread. Just one quick comment that may not have been brought up yet. Harry Baird: Oh, but I wasn't "genuinely" free to decide to be created in the first place, and thus incur upon myself the very burden of free will choices at all! *That* might be the best way of...

Re: Gadzooks!

The short answer is yes and no. It will go deeper than that. Hope to develop it slowly and more systematically. Can't right now, will be out for a couple of days or more. Will be based on what I have posted in various threads. Here is a short sketch. 1. Knowledge an individual has is mostly from out...

Re: Gadzooks!

Hmm, just to clarify, was this a Von Neuman bottleneck problem? You meant to say "agree with what" not disagree, I assume. Seems the word disagree was already stuck in the brain bottleneck and was pushed out through the stack without you realizing it? :-)

Re: Gadzooks!

Ginkgo: Yes, it is a good post but unfortunately there are a few problems from my point of view: The biggest hurdle we need to overcome is the idea that science and help prove the truth of the God or the Bible. As I explained to Immanuel Can- it isn't possible. A case in point from your post: If as ...

Re: Gadzooks!

There don't seem to be any takers. So much for the professionals? The way I see it, if two scientists hold opposing points of view, a consensus can eventually (see global warming) be worked out with more time, better data, better analysis, and by repeating the experiment. (Make sure ideologues and p...

Harry Baird wrote: You also write: "Or take consciousness...how does a purely material world suddenly "cough up" this completely non-material property, something the dead opposite of "material"?". Good question. Another atheist friend (they're everywhere, God help us!) ...

Re: Calvin on the Sensus Divinitatis

Arising_Uk wrote: You are assuming it's a non-material property, so you show me a disembodied consciousness and I'll agree with you. Qman: That's of course a hyperbolic statement. If you saw a disembodied consciousness you'd assume you were loosing your mind and would not believe it. If I someone el...

Re: Is religion guilty of moving the goalposts?

Thedoc, did you miss or never take Bible 101? You've got it all backwards. If you do not want proof of any kind your creator will ask you one day what you did with the brain he gave you. If ever I'm in the position that my 'creator' is asking me that question, I'll ask her why she gave me a brain t...

According
to the law of averages you should not have expected better. You just
happened to end up where you are bunched into the lower 50
percentile?:-)

Some renewed interest is apparent for this topic, so, time to bounce to top of active list again.

Re: Is religion guilty of moving the goalposts?

Here is all the proof I need about the hereafter and God's plan. One reason is that I have learned to trust in the competence of other people and not only my own to observe and figure things out. Spinal orthopedic surgeon Dr. Mary Neal dies in a kayak pinned under water for close to 30 minutes. Com...

Re: How can anyone take religion seriously?

Ask yourself the question: “what is it I know from first-hand experience and what is it that I just accepted from others, without really examining how those others acquired that ‘knowledge’. You might be tempted to say that the same is true for science, after all, we learn it from textbooks written...

Re: How can anyone take religion seriously?

Forgive me, QMan, if I take your story with a grain of salt. It's not my story, it's the story of a highly competent orthopedic surgeon who died and came back. Bet you didn't even watch the clip and then form an opinion. As 'House" says in the TV drama: "Everybody lies". It is hard t...
