Re: Is morality objective or subjective?

Well, we know what it isn't. It isn't "subjective." But the "we" you speak of seem to be very few; at least on this forum. Agreed. Most here seem to be stupified by the smoke-and-mirrors of Subjectivism. That's because they WANT to believe that there's an alternative "moral...

Re: Is morality objective or subjective?

I think the project of explaining where our moral values and codes come from - 'filling the actual gap' - is important. So I'm following your developing argument with interest. I think the title of your thread, "Is morality objective or subjective?", is a bit problematic; it leaves the qu...

Re: Is morality objective or subjective?

I don't doubt that a lot of people do think of morality, or certain aspects of it, as something that corresponds to some sort of truth, but the topic is about what morality actually is, not what some people happen to believe it is. Well, we know what it isn't. It isn't "subjective." But t...

Re: Is morality objective or subjective?

That's what most people seem to do...to say they disbelieve in objective moral truths, and that morality is all subjective, but then act as if their own beliefs are mostly objectively true anyway. 8) I don't imagine the average person makes the objective/subjective distinction. But, as the saying g...

Re: Is morality objective or subjective?

If He's fictitious, it doesn't matter what you follow. There's no obligation to follow anything...not even your own whims. Even so, I think I will follow my whims, just in case they turn out to be objectively true. πŸ™‚ That's what most people seem to do...to say they disbelieve in objective moral tru...

Re: Is morality objective or subjective?

Even the inventor of a subjective axiom is not morally obligated to follow it. So it isn't, in any intelligible sense at all, a "moral" edict. It's simply an arbitrary whim...a twinge. So the question is, do we follow our own arbitrary whims, or those of a fictitious god? πŸ€” If He's fictit...

For objective morality, your agreement is not required. Moral truth will proceed, regardless of you.
Proceed to be ignored by those who don't happen to agree with it, and who may even have an alternative objective morality of their own, you mean?

Re: Is morality objective or subjective?

My comment actually has zero to do with authority. It has to do with rationality. Your Subjectivism will not rationalize any explanation to the effect that anybody else should be concerned about what you think. That's definitional, since you believe that morality is entirely made up by individuals....

That's rich coming from someone who believes the Bible is literal truth. :?
Well, we're going to see about that.
