Re: "NEVER MIND THE BOLLOCKS", HERE'S THE SIMPLE TRUTH ABOUT ABORTION

Crime rate reduction (less unwanted/abandoned children). Lower death rates for mothers who seek unsanitary abortions on the black market. Early termination of unviable offspring (genetic defects, other illnesses etc.) Those are the three I can remember off the top of my head. Yes, apart from all th...

At the same time, an opinion is not a basis for policy, of course.
As far as abortion is concerned, there is nothing else to base policy on.

Re: "NEVER MIND THE BOLLOCKS", HERE'S THE SIMPLE TRUTH ABOUT ABORTION

Well, there are a couple of assumptions in this claim, and they'd need proof. No, IC, let me stop you there. I am not going to read any further, I am not going to get tangled up in your convolutions and spurious threads masquerading as logic. I was expressing my opinion, not making a claim. I canno...

Re: "NEVER MIND THE BOLLOCKS", HERE'S THE SIMPLE TRUTH ABOUT ABORTION

But the problem with that point is that one doesn't state things that one expects to have "no weight." Why bother? But where is any "weight" at all coming from, and why should any of us agree to pick it up, if Peter's opinion simply "has no more weight" than its total opposite? I don't really know ...

But if you're saying, "IC is wrong to have a strongly-held moral opinion,"
I don't think anyone is saying that. But it is only an opinion, it carries no more or less weight than the opposite opinion; I think that is the point that is being made.

Re: What could make morality objective?

I disagree. Lightwaves and brain-processing (electrical and chemical) to produce perception are real things we can measure. We may well be able to measure various kinds of brain activity, but I don't think we are yet able to measure the nature or degree of a perception. Can we even infer the presen...

Re: What could make morality objective?

But do you think moral rightness and wrongness are similarly features of reality, like lightwaves and brains? There is a similarity, but not a complete parallel. Lightwaves exist, but our perception of them is constructed in the brain/mind. A particular situation could be said to exist, but the nat...

Re: What could make morality objective?

Sorry, but I think you're in a muddle. Colours are features of reality, outside our minds. (I assume you're not an idealist.) But moral rightness and wrongness are not such features of reality, outside our minds. Colours exist when there's no one to perceive and categorise them. But there can be no...

Ah, even if I knew ... how could I be certain?
Why would you want to be certain? It's not like it's your nephew and you have to remember his birthday.

I think you need to find a way to reconcile yourself to a lifetime of turmoil. Either that or stop striving for the impossible.

Re: "NEVER MIND THE BOLLOCKS", HERE'S THE SIMPLE TRUTH ABOUT ABORTION

this cant be the full extent of the word's meaning lets say i am writing a novel about Neanderthals "Gook murdered Droog with the mammoth thigh bone" Obviously there are no laws, does that mean the user of the word 'murder' is improper? According to my understanding, Kayla, yes, 'murder' would not ...
