Re: Nietzsche, Our Contemporary
Hmm. Sounds to me like Nietzsche was an atheist whose only solution to "values" was God (the Ubermensch). No wonder he was so depressed.

Re: Is God Irish?
Do you mean the argument in the article? Yes. What was the flaw? As the argument was stated there is a problem with step 3. The appeal to the unknowable in the "if" half of the statement doesn't justify the "then" part. It fails the unicorn test. If one replaces the object in th...

Re: Is God Irish?
God’s existence may very well be undecidable. But if so, the undecidability does not stem from Gödel’s famous theorem. Well, note that the phrase was "logically undecidable". I think that implies codifying the statement somehow. Even if the author didn't intend that, the implications of G...

Re: Feeling the strain of 'science'. Questions the point.
You are a muslim, right? No, I am not. The presumptions you are making should not be part of what I expect you think is a "scientific" outlook on the world. Atheism is the way to go. How does this relate to my comments on the subjective aspects of science? I never said science is wrong or...

Re: Feeling the strain of 'science'. Questions the point.
Yeah, I think the public perception of science leans toward realism, so it can be a shock to learn how subjective science can be.

Re: Is God Irish?
This is the best explanation I've seen on the difficulties of a rationalist approach to the question, "Does God exit?" I especially liked the section on the applicability of Godel, and how that flowed into the final "proof" that God is likely to exist. For those who have read the...

Re: John Rawls & Justice
I'll have to admit that over the past few issues I was beginning to question the wisdom of buying a subscription. The amount of material I found enjoyable was rather thin. This issue has been completely different. I think I've enjoyed every single article so far. McCabe's article on justice is just ...

Re: Did Time Begin With A Bang?
How can it be such a bitter view when even a lot of philosohers are conceding the point? You need to read the "Philosophy Inc." article in the latest issue. Seriously? Yes, seriously. You seemed to agree that science has not settled on an answer as to whether time has a beginning, and tha...

Re: Did Time Begin With A Bang?
Doubt all you want, but in his last book he specifically wrote that philosophy was dead, and he did that precisely because philosophy has nothing to offer science at this point. I haven't read his latest book, so I don't know if you properly represent it, but it is sad to see this type of thing hap...

Re: Did Time Begin With A Bang?
Hawking would laugh at what Tallis wrote, then get ticked off. I doubt that. He seems much more gracious than that, and much more willing to consider questions like this than you indicate. I'm not saying I agree with Tallis, but at least I'm willing to engage those with views that differ from mine....

Re: Did Time Begin With A Bang?
Tallis. He's writing pure nonsense. If he had a valid theory of time, then why not get it published in a physics journal? He can't, because it is nonsense. Now, anyone reading his nonsense will misunderstand science, and that is harmful. The man should be ashamed. Given that the question Tallis ask...

Re: Did Time Begin With A Bang?
"... physicists who dismiss philosophy are often doing philosophy themselves, but very badly." That quote from the article is a keeper. Keep in mind that the whole article is more a teaser for a book than a claim to have solved anything. As such, the other items worth noting are the recomm...
