Hi AMod,

I can't say I've been following all this that closely. I thought wolfie had anotated his own title as a boast. Am I wrong - did you change it?

Hi AMod,

I don't tend to read Barbara's stuff. I don't like it. However I don't like this change to the title of her thread. It has an air of ghettoizing her and I find that a bit distasteful.

I think that we place “Science” on too high a pedestal and thereby distort our comprehension of political and social problems. We cannot solve social and political problems like we solve the questions formed by the normal sciences. Do you think that we place Science on too high a pedestal? I have a...

Depends what you are interested in. If you are interested in learning more about why Kuhn was so influential (and perhaps why Polanyi was not) I would recommend Thomas Kuhn: A Philosophical History for our Times by Steve Fuller. Thanks. If memory serves right then a good intro was once, What is Thi...

I agree with Bullwinkle about starting with Kuhn. It's why I got into philosophy of science. Polanyi also good but much longer book than Kuhn's, also less important in the history of philosophy of science. Rortabend, I think that your statement is correct. Polanyi seems to have been rather overlook...

Someone once told me that I had so much nose hair that they expected to see Tarzan swinging from one of my nostrils to the other.

It still makes me laugh.

Hi RachelAnn,

Try Thomas Kuhn's 'Structure of Scientific Revolutions' or Michael Polanyi's 'Personal Knowledge', the latter because Polanyi was a great scientist and a great philosopher - an unusual combination.

By the way, you haven't ever read Sheldrake's book on Morphic resonance have you - the way you talk about rubber sheets reminds me of his argument? No I haven't heard of it. Would you recommend it? Yet the fact it is difficult for us to imagine isn't really a compelling objection. I think the best ...

Hi all, Interesting discussion. I noted that in chapter 4 of his 'God Delusion' Dawkins invoked the anthropic principle for the origin of life. He also acknowledged that it might need to be evoked for the origin of eukaryotic cells and for conciousness because these major developments seemed to be b...

Hi Gill, I'm in Edinburgh. Where abouts up North are you? Descartes 'Meditations on First Philosophy' is a good first text. If you're interested in the philosophy of science then I found Thomas Kuhn's 'Structure of Scientific Revolutions' very readable. I'd also recommend John MacMurray's 'Interpret...
