Re: Theism - better to believe a lie?

If it were ever proven scientifically that it's best for the well being of an individual, a society, and evolution to have a belief in god, then is it best to have a belief in god regardless if it is true? Or put another way can the value of believing a lie outweigh the value of knowing the truth? ...

Re: Reasons for (or against) life?

Anything you like is a reason to live, as that's the only way to experience it. There are no arguments against life that makes sense down the road, but you can get into situations where dying is an accidental downside of living. All parts of life has its costs, some are great enough to end us. Fight...

I don't think the world is as simple as that you can measure anything by the number of synapses they have unless it's ridiculously high or extremely small. Anything in-between is likely to not mean a lot of and by itself.

Need abstraction and its variables

Dealing with particular problems can make for quite great success as with regard to the status of the need-object of the individual. It can make the individual quite satisfied and happy, in more simple words. Unfortunately, we live in a world where solving particular problems can require both tremen...

Re: Wood and Chair question

An "object of nature" would suffice I think for the first one. The second would be an "object of humankind". There's no simple word that I know of, but those two should help you understand the difference a long way. Wouldn't this revert back to a beaver dam being simply "wo...

Re: Science or art?

Neither. Philosophy is the foundation that creates both. Without philosophy art would've been a mess of uninterpretable lines, curves, colours, sounds etc. Science is defined by philosophy. While there has been talk of a Science of Philosophy, that's used to mean something else than what you think. ...

Re: Innate vs rationality

I think Kant's categories of understanding is a bit more plausible in terms of innate ideas. That is to say, intuitive understanding being a psychological necessity whereby the mind imposes understanding on our experiences. Kant's ideas are a bit more in keeping with a modern understanding of the t...

Preparation as enabler?

I've been thinking, might it be that all we have to do, to be able to complete more tedious tasks that we struggle with... is to prepare? Should "preparation" itself be a more central theme of education and learning? Should we all focus more on preparing to accomplish our goals instead of ...

Re: Contemporary Film

lol, a poster of towers for harry potter ^^ While there are towers in harry potter, they play a very little role. Likely what you saw was Lord of the Rings 2, which is called "Two Towers", and was released like 10 years ago. The latest harry potter movies are called "The Deathly Hallo...

Re: Contemporary Film

Aye. It may be that that is the case, but I have mixed feelings about thinking this for this particular case. First and foremost because a lot of the momentum had already been gathered before the financial crisis, when the world was thriving and nobody were very worried about the future of their hom...

Re: Contemporary Film

What does it mean when the supplier of mainstream film (USA) in this day and age churn out film after film where the end of the world is the subject? I think it has to do with it being a rather recent subject. To be honest there aren't that many movies with the end of the world as a theme, but it i...

Re: Ways of being immoral

Laws enable a secure environment in which people can do as they please without harming others. Why should they do as they please? And why would this be against what I'm saying, security is one of the essences of what I'm talking about ^^ When when a law is broken you cannot forebear upon prosecutio...

Re: Ways of being immoral

No I'm not stating I like laws at all. I am stating they are necessary, and that there is very little room to consider using "happiness" as a rubric to enforce and devise laws. Room for what? I'm against laws as I've already expressed, so what are you actually arguing against? It must tha...
