Re: 'Nocreation' is the (non)choice ... but just for a while
Granted the whole 'Chicken and Egg' question is symbolic of other processes, but from a biological stand point it is meaningless. Obviously the egg came first because the creature that hatched from the egg is genetically identical to the creature that grew inside the egg. There is no way for the cr...

Re: The Third Rail of Consciousness
The (memorable) content of the act of experiencing (maybe this is better phrased?) could be split either along elapsed time or be some fixed state. An experience could either be a flat image or an event over time.

Re: Hello, - again.
Just finished watching Polar Express with 2 of my grandkids, the grandson would ask to watch it every day he was with me for about 3+ years, and now the grandaughter is asking to watch it. I guess I'll see it a few hundred more times. That's wonderful. I'm happy for you. As I read this thread start...

Re: 'Nocreation' is the (non)choice ... but just for a while
A yet another unconventional means of expressing an philisophical concept ... What came first—the chicken or the egg? This indeed is an excellent philosophical way of expressing that neither one nor the other could have come first, therefore, as they must have evolved together, the answer has to be...

Do you mean the process of having experience or the content of experience?Ginkgo wrote: for Chalmers consciousness equals experience.

Re: Scaling up in Artificial Intelligence
I suppose the OP would have been a lot clearer if all that ad hominem versus some young people wasn't there. But the points made have merit. The neural network, or any other mechanistic model of the mind based on the brain, suffers from incoherence that cannot ever be resolved. The number of factors...

Re: relativity of mind (and one application)
You need to ignore that Chaz guy because he is ignorant as hell. There is such a thing as a completed infinite, and it is used in mathematics all the time. Because of such concepts, we end up with seemingly irrational claims as there are as many even natural numbers as there are odd and even natura...

Re: Godfree's Law of Galaxy motion
"All Galaxies are moving towards their nearest or most powerful Galaxy" This is not true, but let's go on. We have examples of the mechanics of the universe This is OK. It's what physical science usually assumes. with our solar system , the biggest object drawing all other objects towards...

Re: What's stopping us from seeing the truth?
"Men are four. He who knows not, and knows not he knows not He who knows not, and knows he knows not He who knows and knows not he knows He who knows and knows he knows" This is worth a bit of reflection, because its implications seem to reveal much more than what meets the eye. I agree t...

Re: What's stopping us from seeing the truth?
Subtlety is not my strength, I suppose. In my previous post, I praised and defended Plato in depth against Aristotle. Even though I am not a platonist, each reading makes me more aware of Plato's intuitive insight, even given the limitations and imperfections of ancient logic.

Re: What's stopping us from seeing the truth?
I suppose that seeing the truth requires that a person be capable of seeing the truth if it presented itself in an indubitable announcement. Not everyone can. But I'm willing to give all of us the benefit of perfect judgment. If there is truth, I can know that it is truth. Why not? That will leave u...

Re: Is time continuous or discrete?
I have been pondering this question ... if time actually is divided into discrete moments, similar to a planck length but for time, or if it is indivisible and continuous, and you could slow time down as much as you wanted and couldn't see the "frames". After considering it for a short ti...
