Re: Is "lack of belief" a "kind of belief?"
Atheist beliefs? Are you talking about beliefs like "I should floss every day", or "reason is a helpful tool to explore reality"? Surely not, since theists can hold the same beliefs. Calling beliefs like these "atheist" would be silly. Agreed. Surely "atheist beli...

Re: Is it more logical to believe that a 'God' will eventual
Yes...i was waiting for someone to make a point in relation to my posturing on free will. I had considered what yourself and Arising_uk are pointing out, in the past, and had a similar discussion on a forum far far away. That aside. My point still remains that as entropy increases, intelligent bein...

Re: Is "lack of belief" a "kind of belief?"
You have atheist beliefs, and they inform your actions, just as theist beliefs inform their actions. Atheist beliefs? Are you talking about beliefs like "I should floss every day", or "reason is a helpful tool to explore reality"? Surely not, since theists can hold the same beli...

Re: Is it more logical to believe that a 'God' will eventual
...it no longer exhibits simple cause and effect physics, it starts to exert free will. Saying it is easy, but have you wondered how this could possibly occur? It seems impossible to me. Prior to starting to exert free will, every characteristic, every attribute, every desire, motivation, ability, ...

"if theism is a belief, then atheism must also be a belief"...
Who would be so stupid as to suggest that?

Re: aphilosophy
Ok, and what is Christianity? An ideology that is very explicitly all about love. Point being, if an ideology that is very explicitly all about love can be infected with hate, what ideology is immune? Good point, but questionable example. Christianity emerged from a harsh, ignorant worldview that w...

Re: Morality is a Culturally Conditioned Response
I was surprised to read Prinz' statement that "Relativists ... ... believe that conflicting moral beliefs can both be true." In the context (opening paragraph) he seems to equate "true" with correct, as opposed to being mistaken or making a blunder. But notions like true, correct...

Re: An Amoral Manifesto (Part I)
OK, I'm objecting to his insistence that morality is essentially absolute, and that moral relativism is therefore contradictory. I wonder if he rejects aesthetic valuations with the same argument? I'm hesitant to reject moral relativism because it seems to describe perfectly what we observe... that ...

Re: An Amoral Manifesto (Part I)
My denial of moral relativism, however, rests mainly on the unintelligibility of the charge. ‘Moral relativism’ seems to me an oxymoron; for morality in its very concept and essence is supposed to be universal and absolute. Thus, even in the example I just gave regarding killing, morality’s defende...

Re: Hi
Hey Mystic, thanks! I wonder what you mean by "we have choice"? Do you mean we are able, in any given situation, to choose either of two options? Yes, I'm aware of the study that showed - via some brain-imaging technology - that decisions occur several seconds before the subject thinks the...

Hi
Hmm, I use blackbox as an online name... nothing to do with planes, more to do with privacy. I like stretching my brain, and sometimes that doesn't take much. Staring at the stars does it, trying to comprehend the sheer size of the place. I have no philosophic training, so am bound to ask some basic...
